California Volunteers We are the state office tasked with engaging Californians in service, volunteering and civic action.

Led by the state’s Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday, California Volunteers is the state office tasked with engaging Californians in service, volunteering and civic action to tackle our State’s most pressing challenges while mobilizing all Californians to volunteer and serve in their communities. The service initiative was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to build on the efforts of California Volunteers to establish a statewide volunteer corps to help with the state’s response to emergencies and disasters. California Volunteers also administers the AmeriCorps programs in California with over 80 programs providing critical services to more than 160,000 Californians annually.

Since 2019, more than 50,000 Californians have served through the California Service Corps, supporting students, addressing food insecurity, advancing climate action and helping communities recover from disasters.

As GO-Serve Director and California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday reminds us: “Everyone has something to offer and everyone needs to serve.”

GO-Serve Director Josh Fryday attended the first summit focused on belonging in an age of fragility at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences at the Vatican.

Reflecting on California’s service story, Director Fryday shared how service creates opportunities for people to connect, contribute and become part of something bigger than themselves.

Everyone has something valuable to contribute, and everyone deserves the opportunity to feel a sense of belonging. Through service, Californians can build stronger connections, strengthen communities and create a shared sense of purpose. 💙
