Two CHP Officers Seriously Injured in I-80 Crash

On October 13, 2026, CHP - Solano officers were investigating a fatal crash on I-80 eastbound, west of Air Base Parkway, when a Tesla traveling at freeway speed entered the closed lanes and struck a patrol vehicle occupied by two officers.

The lanes were closed with flares and cones, and several emergency vehicles were at the scene with emergency lights flashing.

Both officers sustained serious injuries but are recovering. The Tesla driver sustained minor injuries.

The driver claimed he was asleep and that the vehicle was operating in Tesla’s Full Self-Driving mode at the time of the crash.

Despite its name, Full Self-Driving is not fully autonomous. It is an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system that requires continuous driver supervision.

Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles. Distracted and inattentive driving can have devastating consequences.

Slow down. Move over. Stay alert. Lives depend on it.

You spoke. We listened. We took action.

Over the past several weeks, CHP - Merced has received numerous complaints about commercial vehicles speeding, traveling in improper lanes, and making unsafe lane changes on our local highways.

Last week, officers from the CHP Merced Area, CHP - Chowchilla River Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility, and CHP - Central Division Mobile Road Enforcement team joined forces for a commercial vehicle focused Coordinated Integrated Traffic Enforcement (CITE) operation.

Our efforts included support from lieutenants from both the Merced Area and Chowchilla River, along with sergeants from both commands who were out in the field working alongside our officers.

While the operation focused on commercial vehicles, our commitment to traffic safety doesn't end when the operation is over.

Our officers are on the road every day, watching for dangerous driving behaviors involving ALL vehicles. Whether it's a passenger car, pickup truck, or commercial vehicle, traffic laws apply to everyone.

We appreciate the community members who have taken the time to report their concerns. Your calls and messages help us identify problem areas and direct enforcement efforts where they're needed.

Last week's operation may be over, but our enforcement efforts are not.

CTC I-26 is on the move! 🏃‍♂️

Today, 119 cadets hit the pavement for their run from the CHP Academy to the State Capitol!

With graduation just around the corner this Friday, friends and family showed up to cheer them on and support them as they near the finish line of their academy journey.

One more milestone before these future officers earn their badges!

The statewide Tribal-Traffic Education Program (TTEP) provides free traffic safety education and resources for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists on or near tribal lands throughout California. Programming can be adapted for all ages and addresses important safety topics, including proper child passenger restraint use and the dangers of impaired driving.

The California Highway Patrol recognizes the importance of honoring Indigenous communities, acknowledging their enduring legacy, and respecting the sovereignty and cultural heritage of Tribal Nations throughout California and beyond. Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and Tribal Nations.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Bust 🚔

On the evening of Sept. 30, an officer assigned to CHP - Golden Gate Division K-9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a speeding violation on a freeway in Oakland.

During the traffic stop, the officer observed indicators of possible criminal activity. The officer deployed his K-9 partner, Fritz, who immediately alerted to the odor of drugs coming from the vehicle. 🐕‍🦺

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of more than 8 pounds of suspected methamphetamine.

The driver was arrested on felony drug charges.

As California's state police, this enforcement action highlights the important role the CHP K-9 unit plays in detecting illegal drugs and keeping California's communities safe.

California Highway Patrol stands with those affected by breast cancer, including survivors, those currently fighting, caregivers, families, and loved ones.

Throughout the month, you may notice CHP officers wearing a breast cancer awareness pin on their uniforms; a small symbol of support for those affected by this disease.

Breast cancer can impact anyone. Early detection can make a difference, so take the time to know your risk, schedule recommended screenings, and encourage the people you love to do the same.

Together, we can raise awareness, show support, and remind those facing breast cancer that they are never alone. 💗
