Today we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We remember loved ones lost. We owe a debt of gratitude to the heroes who serve, and to their families.

Whether doing read along sessions at their summer programs, community wide poetry jams or putting on their annual MLK march through Del Paso, Roberts Family Development Center is always there for the people of North Sacramento. Their ceaseless service to the community includes providing PreK – 12th grade academic support, youth mentorship, parental education and youth volunteer opportunities. Derrell and Tina Roberts have established as a pillar of our community and I am proud to recognize them as my 2026 Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 6.

Nearly 6 years ago, senseless gun violence stole the life of 9-year-old Makaylah Brent who was playing at Mama Marks park in Del Paso when a gang member opened fire.
The park became a blighted ghost town. But the community came together to take the park back and make it a place where neighborhood kids could play. And today, the Del Paso Heights Community Association and Christine Jefferson Children’s Foundation hosted a beautiful spring celebration, dedicating a mermaid in the renovated splash garden to Makaylah’s memory.

Good work being done by youth and the staff that support them at the Sacramento Youth Detention Facility! Today, Sacramento Probation Chief Jamal Rowe hosted a tour and showcase featuring art, literature, culinary creations, an impressive vegetable garden, and hand-crafted wood work made through the construction training program. These programs foster creativity and help incarcerated youth learn valuable like skills to plan for a brighter future.

Today we concluded our AD06 Young Legislator Program. I was honored to host 9 passionate high school students committed to creating change in our community.
The students learned about California’s legislative process, attended speaker seminars, met local leaders, and even developed their own policy proposals. Their thoughtfulness, leadership and dedication can give us all hope for the future.

has been an unstoppable voice for victims, born from the Salarno family’s own unimaginable tragedy when their daughter Catina Rose Salarno was senselessly murdered at just 18 years old. Since 1990, CVU has provided vital support to families and unwavering advocacy on behalf of crime victims. I am grateful for their work and deeply honored to receive their legislator of the year award.
