“The horrific experience of a brave Cornell student highlights the continuing epidemic of s*xual violence and exploitation on college campuses. As Deputy Attorney General, I prosecuted a case where the defendant stole the victim’s financial aid check and forced her into prostitution.

AB 1845 requires s*x trafficking prevention education, training, and clear law enforcement protocols on college campuses, to better protect California students from s*xual abuse and exploitation.

Grateful to the Survivor Policy Coalition, 3Strands Global Foundation, and the Association of American University Women for sponsoring this important bill and to Governor Newsom for signing it.”

From my legal work as Planned Parenthood’s general counsel, to fighting for constitutional amendments in California and then in Nevada, to strengthening access as a California Assemblywoman, I won’t stop fighting for reproductive rights. Thrilled that Governor Newsom has signed AB 1854 which protects California doctors and patients from out-of-state efforts to punish people for providing or receiving reproductive healthcare. Thanks to Attorney General Bonta, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and Reproductive Freedom for All for supporting this important effort.

I got to honor a dear friend and human rights legend Friday night at a beautiful celebration commemorating the work of the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation. Amagda Perez, executive director of CRLAF is a fierce advocate for immigrants and farm workers and has inspired generations of lawyers through her work at the UC Davis King Hall immigration legal clinic. We first met there 25 years ago, and it’s been a blessing to work with her ever since.

When officers violate the immense trust the public places in them, there must be swift and serious consequences. I’ll be introducing legislation, in partnership with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, that makes it crystal clear that if an officer misuses ALPR data they’ll face criminal accountability.

As Supervising Deputy Attorney General, I spent years prosecuting defendants who exploited, abused and sold vulnerable victims. But what California needs more of is prevention. AB 1766 and AB 1845 ensure that students and school staff are educated and have the tools to protect themselves from predators, both on campus and online. Grateful to the Survivor Policy Coalition for pouring their hearts into this work and bringing forward innovative and effective solutions.

On this day, we remember the 2,977 innocent lives taken on September 11, 2001, and we honor the heroes who ran toward danger instead of away from it. 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers gave everything trying to save lives. Their courage reminds us what it means to serve something greater than ourselves. We carry their memory with us, today and always.
