Today, we pause to remember Officer Sean Poore, a dedicated public servant whose memory continues to inspire everyone who worked alongside him and the communities he served. On the eighth anniversary of his passing, the CHP South Sacramento Area fondly remembers a life marked by kindness, camaraderie, and a heartfelt commitment to serving the community.

As road users, keeping school students safe is everyone’s legal and moral duty 🚸

During this National School Bus Safety Week, the CHP South Sacramento Area reminds everyone that the greatest threat to a student's safety occurs when they get on or off the bus.

Remember these important safety tips around school buses:

🛑 Stop when a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop sign.
🛑 Never pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing.
🚸 Watch for children near bus stops, in school zones, and crossing the street.
⚠️ Always follow posted speed limits and stay focused behind the wheel.

This week, we also want you to know that our school bus officers are on the ground daily, conducting meticulous, hands-on mechanical inspections (like the one pictured here) and certifying drivers through rigorous background checks, written rules tests, and specialized behind-the-wheel tests.

Safe driving starts here! Traffic collisions remain a leading safety concern for teens, but early education makes all the difference.

Our upcoming CHP Start Smart class is a FREE, 2-hour driver safety course hosted by the California Highway Patrol, specifically designed for new and soon-to-be drivers (ages 15-19) and their parents/guardians.

What we cover:
• Collision avoidance techniques & defensive driving
• Distracted driving & Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws
• Real-life collision factors and how to avoid them
• Parent/teen responsibilities behind the wheel

When: Tuesday September 29 from 6PM-7:30PM

Look whose weekend plans got cut short!🎈

The impaired driver of this vehicle rear‑ended another vehicle along Northbound State Route 99 near Galt on Friday, Oct. 16.

Upon investigation, South Sacramento Area officers took the driver into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. A subsequent vehicle check led to the discovery of these canisters of nitrous oxide and balloons.

Turns out the only thing “laughing” was the gas because nobody was laughing once the crash happened, and the driver's weekend plans got an "exotic whip" straight into DUI investigation!

Impaired driving isn’t funny. Not on our roads, not behind the wheel, not when lives are at stake.

Stay safe. Drive sober. Always.

🎃 Halloween festivities are around the corner, and we’re bringing some serious horsepower to the patch! 🚗💨

The CHP - South Sacramento Area is thrilled to invite you to our annual Trunk-or-Treat! This year, we’re pulling out all the stops with a spectacular lineup of classic cars, lowriders, and hot rods alongside our CHP patrol vehicles. Bring the whole family out for an incredible evening of community, culture, and holiday fun!

It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles’ family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 46% of car seats are misused. However, a properly installed safety seat can reduce fatal injury crashes by up to 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.

Before you hit the road, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reminds parents and caregivers to follow these vital steps:

🚗 Check the Seat: Ensure the car seat or booster seat is appropriate for your child's age, height, and weight.

👶 Rear-Facing is Safest: California law requires children under 2 years old to ride rear-facing unless they weigh 40+ pounds or are 40+ inches tall. Keep them rear-facing as long as possible.

🪢 Check the Harness: Make sure straps are snug, flat, and the chest clip is at armpit level.

🛑 Look Ahead to 2027: Start practicing the state's "Five-Step Test" now to prepare for upcoming changes to booster seat laws coming January 1, 2027.
