HOME HEATING FIRE SAFETY – Stay warm, stay safe!
By: Jeff Armstrong, Fire Chief at Selkirk and Northside Fire

As temperatures drop across North Idaho, wood stoves, and portable space heaters become an important part of keeping our homes warm. Unfortunately, heating equipment can also create a
significant fire risk when it is improperly installed, maintained, or used.

Heating is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. Many of these fires can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions.

Wood Stoves: Wood-burning stoves are common throughout our community and can provide reliable heat, but they require regular maintenance and careful use. Have your chimney, stovepipe, and
woodstove inspected and cleaned annually by a qualified professional. If you are going to use manufactured logs, use the ones specifically labeled for use in wood stoves. Some fireplace logs contain wax or other binders and should not be used in a wood stove.

Keep furniture, firewood, clothing, curtains, and other combustible materials at least three feet away
from wood stoves and dispose of ashes properly.

Portable Space Heaters: Space heaters can provide supplemental heat, but they require proper use.
While portable space heaters are one of the more uncommon heat sources, they have accounted for a disproportionately large portion of fatal heating fires.

Always keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including bedding, furniture, curtains, clothing, and paper. Electric space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip. I recommend you choose a heater with an automatic tip-over shutoff and turn it off whenever you leave the room or go to sleep.

Smoke detectors save lives! Fire prevention is important, but early detection is critical when a fire does occur. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms on every level, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms regularly and replace them according to the manufacturer's
recommendations.

Homes with wood stoves, furnaces, or other fuel-burning appliances should also have working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and can become deadly before occupants realize there is a problem.

If you have elderly neighbors, take a moment to check on them this winter. Make sure they have a safe, reliable source of heat and help ensure they understand basic home heating and fire safety.

🔥Wildfire Situation Report, 09/27/2026🔥

Here is your last Wildfire Situation Report for 2026. We will have an additional update later in the year with some final data. The regular situation report will return next spring.

We have a few incident management teams committed around the west and about 6,000 firefighters actively engaged in large wildfires. However, those numbers are steadily declining.

Based on current statistics, potential fire outlook, and recent fire behavior, it appears the 2026 wildfire season is wrapping up. Your Selkirk and Northside wildfire personnel have seen an incredibly busy year. We will have more information on that in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, structure fire season is now upon us. Is your home ready for winter? Now is the time to plan and prepare.

WESTSIDE FIRE DISTRICT ASKS VOTERS TO CONSIDER TWO-YEAR TEMPORARY LEVY

The Westside Fire District Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution placing a temporary levy override before District voters on the November 3, 2026, ballot.

If approved, the two-year temporary levy would provide funding to increase daily career staffing from one firefighter/EMT per day, to two firefighter/EMTs per day. We are often asked why we haven’t been able to keep up financially while the community has grown. The primary reason being, our budgets do not increase
with growth. Therefore, we have no way to keep up with that growth or inflation without voter approval.

The temporary levy is specifically intended to address staffing needs and does not include funding for the replacement of a fire engine or other apparatus. District leadership will continue pursuing alternative funding sources for apparatus replacement and evaluating options for meeting the district’s long-term staffing needs.

Fire Chief Jeff Armstrong said:
“One of the challenges facing small fire districts is that our communities expect and deserve reliable emergency
services, but we must provide those services with significantly fewer resources than larger agencies. This temporary levy gives the voters an opportunity to consider additional staffing while we continue working toward sustainable, long-term solutions.
The district encourages residents to learn more about the levy, the district’s current staffing model, and its long-term financial and operational needs. Members of the public are welcome to attend regular meetings of the Westside Fire District Board of Commissioners, held on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at 825 Railroad Avenue in Dover, as well as upcoming public meetings and town halls.

Dates, locations, and additional information will be posted on Selkirk’s page.

STATEMENT: The temporary two-year levy will be used to obtain staff, increase the number of firefighter/EMTs, from one per day to two per day, and will be a tax increase of $23.00 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value, per year, based upon current conditions, for a total of $67.00 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value, per year, based upon current conditions.
