While we are a few days late to post due to field training, we would be remiss not to recognize the devastating effects of the largest terrorist attack in U.S. history on 11 September 2021.

24 years ago, our nation was attacked in New York City, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost in the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil.

In the immediate aftermath, the 1-172nd Cavalry Regiment (MTN) was called to action as the events of 9/11 gave rise to the Global War on Terror (GWOT). Over the next two decades, the Regiment answered the nation’s call:

• 2005: Deployed as Task Force Saber to Iraq.

• 2010: Deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

• 2021: Deployed to Kosovo as part of KFOR peacekeeping operations.

To this day, the 1-172nd Cavalry Regiment (MTN) continues its readiness to serve. In 2026, the Regiment will deploy in support of Operation Spartan Shield (OSS) in the Middle East and to Joint Multinational Training Group – Ukraine (JMTG-U) in Germany, standing committed to defending our nation and supporting our allies.

Today, we honor all those lost on September 11, 2001, the Soldiers who gave their lives in the Global War on Terror, and the continued service of our Regiment.

We will never forget.

This summer, the 1-172CAV is partnering with Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) as well as the Cub Scouts to volunteer in the local community by assiting with teaching various merit badges to include first aid, climbing, scoutcraft, range and target activities, and more. Here are a few photos from the S1 working with local scouts at Mount Norris Scout Reservation during the “Heroes Among Us” themed week of resident camps. Shoutout to all the scouts who successfully climbed Mt. Norris with CPT Larrabee and 1SG Perkins!

Finally, a special shoutout must also be made to Beckett, 11, from Scout Troop 220 out of Woodstock. He outperformed all expectations, always stayed motivated, and is proudly looking to serve in the Army when he is of age. We commend your incredible passion and spirit! With permission from mom, Kristina, we have included a photo of Beckett doing what he loves most, WWII re-enactment. If you’re attending weeks 3 or 4, we will see you there!

This April, our very own SSG. Buck will take on his second Tough Ruck Boston, a 26.2-mile march honoring our Fallen Military & First Responders.

2025 Tough Ruck Boston participants carry the names of fallen comrades and a 35+ lb. rucksack, all while raising critical funds to support military families and families of the Fallen in times of need.
Those who complete this incredible challenge earn the official 129th Boston Marathon Medallion and recognition from the Boston Athletic Association.

Let’s show our support for SSG. Buck and all the ruckers making this effort to honor our heroes!

The 86th IBCT (MTN) takes pride in its Soldiers who attend the U.S. Army Mountain Warfare School's Basic Military Mountaineer Course and master the skills required to thrive in alpine combat environments.

🔘 The new badge will be finalized in about 60 days and available to buy at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service within 120 days.

🔘 The Group 4 badge is worn on uniforms alongside other insignia.

The Ram’s Head Device represents expertise and connection across generations of mountain warriors. We're glad the proposed design carries that legacy forward.

While we are all sad to see these amazing views on the ranges of Ethan Allen Firing Range go...

Mountain soldiers always love to see the ice and snow even more.

Do you have any fond memories of training on Ethan Allen?
