Artoss thanks Lyle Young, M.D. of Sonoran Spine for sharing this thought-provoking case “Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) treated with multilevel posterior spinal fusion of the thoracic-lumbar junction and placement of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (NanoBone® Bone Graft)”. Dr. Young was confident in using NanoBone in this patient despite the presence of abnormal calcification/bone formation (hyperostosis) of the soft tissues surrounding the joints of the spine. Fortunately, the patient achieved a solid fusion and a good clinical outcome.

This case has been excerpted from the Artoss Prospective Spine Registry Outcomes (ASTRO) post-market clinical registry study. This multicenter prospective patient registry was developed with the aim of documenting how orthopaedic and neurosurgeons are utilizing the NanoBone products along with relevant patient outcomes. Enrollment and patient follow-up is now complete. Artoss looks forward to sharing and publishing the results of this study.

See the results of our post-market clinical registry using NanoBone® Bone Graft in foot and ankle surgery as published in Podiatry Today. Despite the presence of ample co-morbidities in this patient population, treatment with NanoBone resulted in statistically significant improvements in pain relief and function. 107 of 108 patients achieved bony fusion, a rate of 99.1%. Physical activity levels increased and use of pain medication decreased at six months post-surgery.
