Had the awesome opportunity to watch live the Wreath Laying Ceremony and Mass in honor of the Pontifical Swiss Guard yesterday. In 2012 while on deployment with the USS Enterprise I visited Rome and the Vatican where I met two Swiss Guards. Was able to buy some cherished souvenirs and was able to get an exclusive tour of their armory. This is probably the highlight of my Naval Career. Recruits to the guards must be unmarried Swiss Catholic males between 19 and 30 years of age who have completed basic training with the Swiss Armed Forces. This is the 508 anniversary of the Swiss Guards. New guards are sworn on May 6th every year in the San Damaso Courtyard in the Vatican.
