Saint George Police Department Welcome to the Saint George Police Department page. We are proactive, but still sensitive to the needs of a smaller community environment.

The City of Saint George, Kansas is a rapidly growing and progressively minded community located in SW Pottawatomie County (6 miles east of Manhattan) and is one of the fastest growing areas in the State of Kansas. The Police Department (under new leadership since 2015) has rebuilt from the ground up with integrity, professionalism, and a community based policing philosophy that works with the community rather than against it.

🚨🚧NOTICE: EXTENDED CLOSURE OF MILITARY TRAIL / MAIN STREET🚧 🚨

Beginning Tuesday, September 22, Military Trail, also known as St. George’s Main Street, will be closed to through traffic for at least 60 days, with the possibility of the closure extending up to 90 days, while crews complete additional work associated with the Safe Routes to School Project and address an underlying roadway concern discovered in the project area.

📍Closure Area 📍
Eastbound traffic: Military Trail will be closed to eastbound through traffic just after Jackson Street.
Westbound traffic: Military Trail will be closed to westbound through traffic beginning at Sand Creek Road. Local traffic will be permitted from east to westbound for residents and property owners needing access to homes and properties within the affected area.

We recognize that this will be a significant inconvenience for our community. The closure will require a portion of our residents to use alternate routes to access the school, local businesses, and other areas of St. George. We understand this detour will add additional travel time, and we appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is completed.

Why has the plan changed?
This extended closure was not part of the original construction plan.
As work progressed, crews encountered sandy and unstable soil conditions that require a more substantial construction approach than originally anticipated. These conditions require additional excavation, support, and wall installation work to ensure the project is completed safely and properly.

Rather than complete the sidewalk improvements and potentially return later to address a larger roadway problem, the City believes it is important to address these concerns now while the area is already under construction.

Unfortunately, completing this work properly requires Military Trail to remain closed to through traffic throughout this phase of construction. Detour and traffic-control signage will be posted to help drivers, pedestrians, residents, and school traffic navigate around the closure.

The City understands the impact this will have, particularly on residents in the affected area and families traveling to and from school. We know this closure will be frustrating and disruptive, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We ask for the community’s patience and cooperation as crews work to address these unexpected conditions and complete the project as safely and efficiently as possible.

While the temporary closure will be challenging, completing this work now will not only provide new sidewalks and safer pedestrian access through the Safe Routes to School Project, but will also address an important roadway concern before it has the opportunity to become a larger problem.

The City will provide updates as construction progresses and will communicate any changes to the anticipated reopening timeline.

Today, we pause to solemnly remember the events of September 11, 2001.

We honor the innocent lives lost, the extraordinary sacrifices made by first responders who rushed toward danger, and the resilience of a nation that banded together through unimaginable tragedy.

Among the 2,977 lives taken that day, 441 were first responders who answered the call. We will always remember our brothers and sisters who gave everything.

Twenty-five years later, we vow to never forget.

We would like to send out a big “thank you” to our friends at the Caring Community Foundation (https://ccfks.org/)!
Yesterday, they were kind enough to drop off a check for $1,000.00 awarded from their grant program. These funds will go directly toward purchasing a new ballistic carrier and vest for our officers.
Support like this makes a real difference for a small department, and we truly appreciate it!

Get Ready! School is Back in Session on the 13th!

It's almost time to hit the books! Classes officially begin on August 13th.

As students head back to school, we'll see more kids walking and biking.

As a reminder, please stay extra alert during school hours. Keep an eye out for our crossing guards, mind your speed in school zones, and always stop for school buses when those red lights are flashing.

Let's make this a safe and successful school year!

🚂 Big Boy is rolling through Saint George!

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014—the world’s largest operating steam locomotive—is celebrating America's 250th birthday with a historic coast-to-coast tour!

The train is scheduled to depart Topeka heading westbound on Thursday, July 23rd at 12:45 PM. Keep an eye out as this massive piece of railroad history steams along the line through our area!

📍 Track its Live Progress:

⚠️ Important Safety Guidelines for Viewers
If you and your family are heading out to watch or photograph the train, please keep these essential safety tips in mind:

Keep Your Distance: Stand back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks. The average train overhangs the track by at least three feet.

Trains Can’t Stop Quickly: A train’s speed and distance can be deceiving. Never cross or stand near the tracks as a train approaches.

No Trespassing: Railroad tracks, trestles, yards, and right-of-ways are private property. Please stay in designated public viewing areas.

Always Expect a Train: Never assume tracks are inactive—always expect a train at any time.

Drone Regulations: Keep drones at least 25 feet away from railroad tracks and adhere to all FAA regulations.

Protect Your Ears: Steam whistles and engines are extremely loud—hearing protection is recommended, especially for young children.

Let’s enjoy this rare piece of history safely! 🚂💨

🚧 TRAFFIC ADVISORY: 4th of July Travelers & Downtown Construction 🚧

If you are planning to head to Wamego for their famous 4th of July fireworks display this Saturday, please plan your route home carefully!

We know that a massive number of folks travel back to Manhattan via Highway 24 and some like to cut through St. George. If that is your usual route, please be aware that we currently have road construction downtown along First Street.

With the sheer volume of traffic following the fireworks show, First Street is going to back up quickly and cause significant delays.

Our officers will be out working to keep traffic moving as safely as possible.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day!
