Dorchester County Fire Rescue shares our profound condolences to the family of Detective Sgt. Cowee and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department family.

It is with profound sadness that Dorchester County Sheriff Sam Richardson announces the passing of Detective Sergeant Tracy D. Cowee Jr.

Sergeant Cowee was a beloved husband, father and son.

He began his law enforcement career in February 2014 with the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Throughout his career, he continued his commitment to public safety through service with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the Goose Creek Police Department before joining the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.

Sergeant Cowee began his dedicated service with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office on May 22, 2023.

During his tenure with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, he served in the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions, where he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to his fellow deputies, the victims he served and the citizens of Dorchester County.

On November 26, 2025, Sergeant Cowee was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in recognition of his extraordinary work ethic, professionalism, dedication and leadership.

Throughout more than a decade in law enforcement, Sergeant Cowee’s commitment to delivering justice to victims and serving his community was evident in the way he carried out his responsibilities each day.

He was a valued member of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office family, and his loss will be deeply felt by the men and women who had the privilege of working alongside him.

“Detective Sergeant Tracy Cowee dedicated more than a decade of his life to serving others, and he did so with honor, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to justice,” said Sheriff Sam Richardson.

“He was a dedicated law enforcement officer, a respected leader and, most importantly, a member of our Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office family. His passing is a tremendous loss to his family, his colleagues and the communities he served.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sergeant Cowee’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We will forever be grateful for his service and the impact he made on the lives of others.”

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Sergeant Cowee’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who knew and loved him.

Additional information regarding arrangements and memorial services will be released when appropriate and in coordination with Sergeant Cowee’s family.
