At approximately 3:00 PM today, a 911 call came in from the 1500 block of Jackson St for report of a fire in a residential structure. Crews in route found heavy black smoke visible from more than a block away.

On arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire conditions in an up and down duplex. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to the upper unit or attic.

During a search of all levels, firefighters pulled a cat from the smoke filled unit to the exterior where oxygen was administered. The animal was alert and left with the owner. All other occupants escaped safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Today Fire Marshal Smith presented fire safety education to the Saint Paul Advisory Committee on Aging. Fire safety is important to us all, however, statistics show older adults experience an elevated risk of injury or death from fire.
🔥 Hearing Loss
🔥 Limited Mobility
🔥 Vision Changes
🔥 Medication/Drowsiness
🔥 Living Along
🔥 Memory Loss

Are all contributing factors to the increases risk.

🚒If you or someone you know has any of these risk factors, call us at 651-224-7811.
Our Project Safe Haven team will come to your home, conduct a fire safety audit with you, and install smoke alarms or Carbon Monoxide detectors at no charge.

🚒Today, firefighters visited preschool and 1st graders at Nativity Elementary School. They taught basic fire safety, showed firefighting gear and gave a truck tour.

🧑🏼‍🚒 Most fires are preventable. Teaching the basic early goes a long way to keep our communities safe. Kids this age should be taught:
➡️ Their home address
➡️ How and when to call 911
➡️ Practice exit drills in the home (EDITH)
➡️ If there’s a fire, get out and stay out

🔥 An Incredible Honor for Women Explore Fire Day in Minnesota! 🔥

Last night, we had the incredible honor of accepting the Friends of the MSFCA Award at the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association Awards Banquet in Duluth!

What started as a vision to create opportunities for women to explore the fire service has grown into a statewide initiative made possible through collaboration, dedication, and a shared belief that sometimes all it takes is an invitation to change someone's life.

This award represents so much more than one event. It recognizes the countless hours of planning, partnerships, mentorship, and commitment of fire service leaders and volunteers across Minnesota who stepped forward to make Women Explore Fire Day a reality.

We are especially grateful to our regional leads, participating fire departments, mentors, and volunteers, along with our statewide partners—the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA), Minnesota State Fire Department Association (MSFDA), and Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office—for believing in this initiative and helping bring it to life. This recognition belongs to everyone who stepped forward, shared our vision, and helped create opportunities for women across Minnesota!

Perhaps the most rewarding part is knowing that women across Minnesota are now taking their first steps into the fire service because someone opened a door, extended an invitation, and encouraged them to see what was possible. The impact of Women Explore Fire Day reaches far beyond a single day, and we are excited to see where these opportunities lead.

We are humbled and grateful to the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association for this recognition and for supporting our mission of creating opportunities for women to explore their potential as firefighters and first responders.

Our work is far from over. We look forward to continuing to build relationships, create opportunities, and inspire the next generation of firefighters and first responders.

In the face of flames, we find our calling. ❤️🚒
