Homecoming season is about showing up for your team, your friends and your school. Don’t get sidelined by a DWI.

Never drink and drive, plan a sober ride and take away your friend’s keys if you see them getting behind the wheel while impaired.

As fall settles in, daylight gets shorter and visibility becomes more challenging for everyone on the road.

So far this year, 33 pedestrians have been killed in Minnesota crashes.

For pedestrians: Never walk on a highway. Use sidewalks, trails and designated crossings whenever possible.

For drivers: Slow down, stay alert and watch for pedestrians on all roads, especially during the morning and evening when it’s darker.

If you’re involved in a crash, stay buckled and inside your vehicle, if possible. Getting out of your vehicle can put you at risk of being struck by another driver.

Everyone has a role in getting home safely.

Earlier this week, we broke ground on our new headquarters in Roseville.

When this new facility opens in 2028, it will bring more of our people and resources together under one roof and provide the spaces and tools we need to serve Minnesotans today and for generations to come.

This is more than a new building. It’s an investment in the people and future of our agency.

What is a seat belt? It is your first and last defense when something goes wrong while driving or riding in a vehicle.

In 2022, the driver of this car swerved off the road, causing the car to roll. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt and both were thrown from the vehicle.

The driver did not survive the crash. The passenger was airlifted with life threatening injuries, changing their family’s lives in an instant.

You never know what can happen when you get into a vehicle. Because your life matters to so many people, plan for the unexpected and wear a seat belt every trip, every time.

Fall is one of the best times of the year to ride in Minnesota.

Cooler temperatures, changing leaves and scenic roads bring more opportunities to get out on two wheels. But with riding comes more responsibility.

Motorcyclists:
• Don’t speed.
• Ride for the conditions.
• Wear a helmet and protective gear.
• Never ride impaired.

Drivers:
• Look twice for motorcycles, especially at intersections or when changing lanes.
• Give riders plenty of space.

So far this year, 63 motorcyclists have been killed on Minnesota Roads. That’s too many. We don’t want to see that number continue to grow as we head into fall.

Our thoughts remain with the Annunciation Catholic Church and School community in Minneapolis.

Just over one year ago, Trooper Eric Ouellette was among the first responders to care for injured students and comfort parents. In the year since, he has formed a lasting connection with one of the children he helped.

Ouellette reflects on that day, the courage he witnessed and what it reaffirmed about his commitment to serving others.

This teenage driver was stopped for going 107 mph in a 65 mph zone near Deer River. Why was he going so fast? He told our trooper he was late for basketball practice.

No destination is worth risking your life or someone else’s. Plan ahead, slow down and give yourself enough time to get to where you’re going safely.

We’ll never forget the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, the families forever changed and the people who stepped forward to help in the aftermath.

For those of us in the law enforcement community, this day is a lasting reminder of the courage, sacrifice and commitment that define the public safety profession.

As we mark 25 years, our own DPS assistant commissioner reflects on his experience serving at Ground Zero and the importance of stepping up to serve others.
