Metro Deaf School Academic excellence + great school spirit =
Metro Deaf School. Go Cheetahs! Go! Metro Deaf School. At Metro Deaf School, our curriculum is unique.

Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow

Metro Deaf School is a free public charter school for students ages birth-21, who are primarily Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. We are an urban day school serving the seven-county Twin Cites, Minnesota and western Wisconsin area. We use a bilingual, American Sign Language (ASL) and English, interdisciplinary curriculum. Students are taught the linguistic structure of both languages, and the two languages are equally valued. Research has shown that students who have higher levels of ASL proficiency also have higher levels of English literacy (Strong and Prinz, 1007)

We welcome you to our page, and encourage you to take a look and comment on what you see. We ask that your comments be positive and encouraging to those in the pictures or status updates. To ensure a positive environment, MDS staff reserve the right to remove any comments that do not reflect this kind of environment.

Back to the ’90s! What a Night!

Last Friday, our MDS high school students had an awesome time at our Back to the ’90s Homecoming Dance!

We traveled back in time with some totally rad ’90s outfits, delicious Pizza Rolls, Dunkaroos, Sunny Delight punch, and lots of dancing to classic hits from the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, MC Hammer, and more!

From dancing and laughing to making unforgettable memories with friends, it was a night full of fun, smiles, and ’90s nostalgia!

A huge thank you to our students, staff, and everyone who helped make this Homecoming Dance such a special evening!

As we said in the ’90s… AS IF! Talk to the hand! Whatever!

Proud to celebrate Juan's achievements and recognition from Target Careers as an MDS alumni!

Proud to celebrate Juan's achievements and recognition from Target Careers as an MDS alumni!

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating how one team member’s idea is helping create more welcoming experiences for our team and guests.

Juan D., a Checkout Advocate who is deaf in Roseville, Minnesota, drew on his own experience to create a handmade sign to remove communication barriers and make checkout interactions easier. His idea sparked something bigger.

Team members across user experience accessibility and team member experiences partnered with Juan to create the Checkout Communication Resource, a visual tool designed to help guests quickly communicate common requests at checkout.

Today, the resource is available at all Target stores as one of many ways we support team members through our accommodations process.

Juan’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when we gather feedback from our team members, value their ideas and work together to design solutions that help people feel supported, belong and do their best work. And when we create a better experience for our team, we’re better able to deliver the easy, inspiring and friendly experience for our guests.

Metro Deaf School recognizes White Cane Day! 🤍

Our students learned about the history and significance of the white cane, a symbol of independence, mobility, and accessibility for individuals who are blind or have low vision.

Through meaningful discussions, students explored the importance of awareness, respect, and understanding the diverse ways people navigate and experience the world.

At MDS, we celebrate the many ways people communicate, connect, and move through the world, recognizing that accessibility looks different for everyone.
