This week, members of St. Paul Volunteer Fire & Rescue participated in the 9/11 Stair Challenge to honor and remember the 343 firefighters and 60 police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

With every step, we remembered the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who ran toward danger when others were running away. Their bravery continues to inspire firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, and first responders across our nation.

We are grateful for the opportunity to come together as a department, honor those who gave everything, and keep their memory alive.

We remember those who were lost. We honor those who continue to serve. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Yesterday, members of the St. Paul Volunteer Fire & Rescue participated in a Mass Casualty School Shooter Training exercise alongside Dannebrog Fire & Rescue, Farwell Volunteer Fire Department - Nebraska, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Paul Police Department, and Howard County Medical Center.

Training together with our partner agencies strengthens the coordination, communication, and teamwork necessary to respond effectively during large-scale emergencies. These collaborative exercises provide opportunities to evaluate response efforts, improve operational readiness, and reinforce the partnerships that are essential during critical incidents.

A sincere thank you to each of these agencies for their participation, guidance, and support throughout this training. We also extend our gratitude to St. Paul Public Schools for hosting us, our makeup artist, victim role-players, and every volunteer who gave their time and effort to make this exercise possible.

A final thank you to Palmer Volunteer Fire & Rescue for being on standby for calls, allowing our members to fully engage in this learning opportunity.

**Tomorrow, please stay clear of the area!**

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office, St. Paul Fire and EMS, and other area emergency responders will conduct a joint post–active-shooter medical response training at the St. Paul School on the morning of Saturday, July 25, 2026.

Community members may notice an increased presence of law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel, emergency vehicles, and training activity around the school. This is a planned exercise, and there is no cause for alarm.

This training will allow local responders to practice working together to rapidly locate, treat, and evacuate injured persons following a critical incident.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve the capabilities of our first responders.
