Congratulations to Ramsey County for effectively ending Veteran homelessness!

Across all 10 of Minnesota’s Continuum of Care regions – covering all 87 counties – we have built systems that ensure any case of veteran homelessness in Minnesota is rare, brief, and non-recurring. Today's certification of Ramsey County's data by Governor Walz follows a rigorous review process and marks an important milestone in Minnesota's commitment to ensure those who have served have the stability of home and the dignity they deserve.

We must continue to ensure that what we have built together is sustained. We must remain focused on what we know works to end homelessness: homes that are affordable, linked to any services that are needed to best support an individual or a family. Dependable funding scaled to the need. A community who dares to believe that ending homelessness is possible – and then shows up to make that vision a reality.

Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) brings state agencies together to coordinate their work and strengthen the many programs and services the state provides. They have brought that same spirit of collaboration to MICH’s Crossroads to Justice strategic plan.

Commissioner Erin Campbell talks about the steps MMB has taken to reduce barriers and increase coordination – and why it’s essential for state agencies and partners to continue working together to prevent and end homelessness.

Today, we recognize the National Day of Remembrance for those who attended Indian boarding schools. On this and every day, we seek both truth and reconciliation for the harms inflicted on our Native relatives.

We are reminded of all the children who didn't make it home, the stolen children we must never forget. We honor them, as well as the children of this generation whose wisdom and resilience inspire us and who carry the stories of their ancestors forward as strength.

We listen, we learn, we commit to a future of understanding and healing, rooted in truth and reconciliation and anchored in action.

The Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness recognizes that Minnesota bears ongoing injuries as a result of structural racism, genocide and economic inequities, which continue to define housing instability and homelessness today. We are committed to housing, racial, and health justice by repairing and transforming unjust systems that have caused and perpetuate housing instability and homelessness.

When we work together, we CAN end homelessness for all our relatives and neighbors.

This moment calls for courage.

As MICH's deputy director Mary Riegert-Soyring reminded us at the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless Conference, "We find courage in one another. We need to support each other to lead us into the future where homelessness is over and all of us have a place to call home. It takes each of us having the courage to shine our light, do our part, to move forward."

Our next MICH Council Meeting is just around the corner! Tune in on Friday, October 2 from 2 – 4 p.m. to hear about the Ramsey County Continuum of Care’s work to effectively end Veteran homelessness.

The Council will review quantitative and qualitative data from the Ramsey County Continuum of Care that demonstrates their commitment to ending Veteran homelessness, and that any Veteran homelessness in their region will be rare, brief, and nonrecurring. Should the data be satisfactory, the Council will submit the findings to the Governor.

“Effectively ending Veteran homelessness” doesn’t mean a Veteran will never have a housing crisis. What it does mean is there is a strong, intentional, coordinated system in place to identify a Veteran in crisis and connect them with the resources they need to prevent them from falling into homelessness or quickly connect them to a stable home.

Register for the live-streamed Council meeting at https://tinyurl.com/MICHCouncilOct2026

While this meeting is open to the public and we hope you join and listen in to the Council’s discussion, there is no public testimony during the meeting.
