This is important work from the JCPA — we must have an accurate picture of what's happening if we are going to dismantle hate together.

A decline from a historic peak of hate crimes is not the same as real community safety

JCPA and Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC brought together a major coalition of national groups — including Human Rights Campaign, Muslim Public Affairs Council - MPAC, The National Urban League, The Sikh Coalition, and UnidosUS — in a joint statement calling out the problems with the FBI’s latest hate crime data and demanding action.

The data simply doesn’t tell the whole story. Read the full statement to learn what’s missing — and what our communities need to be safe: https://jewishpublicaffairs.org/joint-statement-2025-fbi-hate-crimes/press-release/

We stand in solidarity with our neighbors—Minnesotans won't let anyone be harassed or attacked because of their race or religion. We show up in support for one other in this state!

(And when we do, sometimes we get tea and sambusas afterwards :) and then we go vote together!)

So dust off your patrolling skills—please sign up for a shift to help our Muslim neighbors feel safe at Friday prayers. Bring your whistle just in case, but most importantly, bring a sign showing your support!

Sign up here for a shift tomorrow or through the end of the month! bit.ly/NeighborsVoteMN

We believe that everyone deserves permanent, affordable, beautiful, and accessible housing where all can thrive.

Inspired by the holiday of Sukkot, please join us on Sunday October 18th, from 2-4pm to break bread, create art, and build tenant power!

Brentwood Tenant Union, Quadrel Whittier Tenant Association, and JCA are partnering together to host this housing justice event: tenant unions are integral to the fabric of our neighborhood communities.

Come get to know how these groups work, share food with your neighbors, and make art together to celebrate the roots of renter power in our city.

Please register at the link below for exact location. We'll see you there!

An important message from Liz Loeb, JCA’s board chair:

Early this morning, federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security launched yet another political attack on Representative Omar, this time by invading her home.

Representative Omar and her family are safe. Rep. Omar is clear that she will not be intimidated, and that she will continue to work for her constituents and for the people of Minnesota.

Whatever you may think of Representative Omar’s politics or policies, this kind of attack hopes to work more broadly by destabilizing our civic fabric in the days before an election.

Thank goodness, Minnesotans are ready to respond to this kind of tomfoolery with love and solidarity.

So what can we do?

I am going to talk about Rep. Omar’s contributions to our communities, and about her value as a representative. I’m going to support people in exercising their right to vote. I’m going to check in on my neighbors- especially my beloved Somali neighbors who are being cruelly targeted simply for who they are.

And I am going to note the irony of our federal government attacking a community representative on Indigenous People’s Day. Any of us who are not Native are on stolen land. Let us work together to repair the harm that has been done in our names, and to weave and knit our interdependence into a future for us all.

Much love. xoxo, Liz

Yesterday, because he is desperate to divide us three weeks before the election, President Trump made a wildly inflammatory social media post advocating violence against Minnesota’s Somali American community. His claims are divisive, hurtful, and just plain untrue.

We know and love our immigrant neighbors in Minnesota, and we proved this winter that we will stand in solidarity with those under attack no matter what it takes.

No one should feel unsafe or unwelcome in our state because of their faith, heritage, or background.

Our Jewish tradition calls us to love our neighbor, without exceptions, and to work for the thriving of ALL our community.

Trying to pit us against one another and attack our friends and neighbors of other traditions won’t work, because we know all of our liberation is bound up together.

To our Somali neighbors, co-workers, and friends: you are seen, valued, and not alone.

To our Jewish community: reach out to someone this week, ask how you can support them, and remind each other that we all belong here.

It’s more important than ever now that we understand how all forms of hate are intertwined, and how you can join us in the work of dismantling them.

Take a look at the events on our website (https://www.jewishcommunityaction.org/events) to see how you can get involved in this part of tikkun olam, repairing the world together.

Thanks to for generously sharing this beautiful art created during Metro Surge this winter.

We couldn’t agree more! We are proud to partner with Malika and Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment because we know that the best way to counter Islamophobia and antisemitism is to build relationships and real connections. Shabbat shalom and G’mar Tov!

This month, we mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks on 9/11. May we honor the lives lost on that day — and the countless lives lost and shattered in the racial violence that followed and continues today.

On Sept 15, 2001, Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh American father, was killed while planting flowers in front of his gas station in Arizona by a man who called himself a patriot. He became the first person killed in hate violence after 9/11.

He was the first of thousands of people whose lives have been lost or shattered by the way our nation responded to 9/11. The United States government responded by targeting people based on their faith, race, ethnicity or country of origin, laying the groundwork for today’s brutal campaigns of cruelty against immigrants.

Balbir Ji was killed for wearing his turban as part of his Sikh faith, his commitment to love and serve all of humanity. What would the next 25 years look like if we remembered that everyone is b'tzelem Elohim - created in the image of the divine? What if we chose, like Balbir, to treat all as family — to see no stranger?

As people gather in Mesa, Arizona today to remember Balbir, Minnesotans will remember him along with the 5,000 Minnesotans abducted by ICE, and all of those who have died as the result of hate crimes and state violence. May we reject the narrative that we must fear those who are different from us. Instead may we reach across differences in solidarity with our neighbors to keep each other safe.

L’shana tova to our beloved community. The 25th anniversary of 9/11 ends as our celebration begins this year, giving us the opportunity to truly heed the shofar’s call and awaken our souls to the promise and opportunity of renewal and repentance.

At the age of 12, my first date was at the observation deck of the World Trade Center. The view of New York was so beautiful I said the shehecheyanu.

Today’s ruling has no impact on trans-inclusive policies in states like Minnesota. It does not force any state to permanently uphold discriminatory bans. And it cannot take away the loving communities standing with trans youth.

We all deserve dignity and respect.
