The Big Marsh Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency response services to the St. Pauls, NC community. Pauls High School Auditoruim.

Lieutenant-Kenny Houlton The Fire Department's mission is to prevent the loss of life and property. In addition to responding to fires, the Big Marsh Volunteer Fire Department also responds to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, rescue calls, and incidents involving hazardous materials. The Big Marsh Fire Department was formed on January 21, 1969 at a meeting held at the St. Approximately fifty interested people attended the organizational meeting concerning rural fire protection. The 2nd meeting was held on February 28, 1969 when the location of the fire department building was voted on. Mrs. Ruth Odum Inman donated the land to be used for the building. They became a charter member of the state on March 12, 1969. They received their first call on March 27, 1969 to a burning farm house.

Big Marsh Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a NC Hunter Education Certification Course on Monday, November 16th and Tuesday, November 17th, 2026. This course meets the hunter education requirement for all first-time hunting license buyers in North Carolina. Certification is accepted in every state and province in North America. The class will begin at 6:00 p.m. both nights and end at 9:00 p.m. Attendance is mandatory both nights to complete the course. Registration information will be shared at a later date.

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Susan Gail Inman. Susan is a former member of the BMFD Women’s Auxiliary and wife of our Fire Chief Alex Inman. Please keep Chief Inman, their children, grandchildren, family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time.

‼️🚨Unfortunately there will NOT be a turkey shoot at Big Marsh Fire Department for the 2026 season. 🚨‼️ This decision was not made lightly. We do enjoy spending time with our locals in non-emergency situations every fall. We wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving season and thank you for all of your support. 🦃🎃🍁🍂☕️
