As Gibbs High School prepares to celebrate their homecoming, please take a listen to this Elders testimony.

Mrs. Jean Davies, Gibbs high school class of 1955 valedictorian, Hampton Institute (University) alumna, Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror, and lifelong St. Petersburg resident shares her experience about growing up and attending segregated schools in Pinellas County.

Connecting children with the experiences of older generations builds empathy, historical awareness, and lifelong wisdom. 🎥🎞️🎬

I had the privilege of sitting down with several remarkable Gibbs High School alumni from the Class of 1955: Jean Davies, Tom Chase & Louis Williams.

We met with Rui Farias, Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History and Radio St. Pete. We spoke at length about their experiences growing up and attending segregated schools—a time defined by systemic barriers, but more importantly, by the extraordinary resilience, joy, and community these students built together.

Hearing their stories reminded me that progress is never accidental. It is earned, block by block, generation by generation, by ordinary people who refuse to let their potential be defined by unjust laws. The lessons they shared aren't just history; they are a blueprint for the work we still have to do today to build a more perfect union.

These oral accounts were recorded & will be stored in a public digital archive.

To the Class of 1955: Thank you for your warmth, your wisdom, and your unwavering belief in America’s promise.

A beautiful morning spending time with community reminds us of our shared responsibility to look out for one another.

I was honored to attend the Dorothy’s House of Hope inaugural benefit brunch today.

When we lift up survivors, provide them with a safe haven, and give them the tools to rebuild their lives, we aren't just helping individuals—we are strengthening the very fabric of our neighborhoods. It is a powerful reminder that change doesn't happen from the top down; it happens when ordinary people come together to do extraordinary things for a worthy cause.

To Mrs. Linda Watson Matthews & everyone who organized this morning's event, and to the resilient survivors who inspire us all: thank you for your courage, your hope, and your unwavering belief in a brighter tomorrow.

Let's keep pushing forward together!

When neighbors step up for one another, extraordinary things happen.

We are at our best not when we are looking out only for ourselves, but when we recognize that we rise or fall together. Change doesn’t always start from the top down. More often than not, it starts from the bottom up—one block, one porch, one helping hand at a time.

So let’s keep looking out for each other. Let’s keep building those bridges. Because when we choose hope over cynicism, and community over division, there is no challenge we cannot meet.

I spent my morning volunteering with Positive Impact ST. PETE, and I am so deeply moved by the incredible dedication of our community.

Food security is a human right, but true justice means looking at the whole picture. That is why I cannot wait to see the life-changing work this team will do at their upcoming Impact Center.

They aren’t just handing out groceries. They are launching an incredible space designed to provide wraparound services. We are talking about housing support, healthcare navigation, job training, and legal advocacy all under one roof. This is how we move from temporary relief to systemic empowerment. This is how we actually lift up our neighbors.

Thank you to every single volunteer and organizer who shows up day after day to build a stronger, more compassionate safety net from the ground up.
