A REMINDER TO TAKE CARE OF OUR FURRY FRIENDS DURING HOT SUMMER DAYS

The Salem County Prosecutor’s Office would like to remind all of our residents that the extreme heat this week – with more sure to come this summer - requires special attention to animal care.

Temperatures of 90°F or above, exposure to direct sunlight, hot pavement, or any other environmental condition that a reasonable person should know poses a risk to an animal's health or safety based on the animal's age, size, physical condition, or the thickness of its hair or fur are considered “adverse environmental conditions” under New Jersey law.

Animals must have continuous access to clean, potable water and shade and shelter that provides adequate ventilation and protection from direct sunlight. A dog house alone is not sufficient if it traps heat or sits in direct sun. Animals also must have protection from hot pavement and other surfaces capable of causing burns. No animals can be confined in an unattended motor vehicle where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

Any animal can become a victim of the heat without proper care and attention.

Puppies, senior animals, brachycephalic breeds (dogs with short muzzles and flat faces, such as English or French Bulldogs and Pugs), overweight animals, animals with underlying medical conditions, and those with thick coats are especially vulnerable.

Please keep your animal companions safe during these hot days.

Wear your jeans with purpose today. There is never an excuse for sexual violence. Join us this Denim Day to stand with survivors of sexual assault and push back against victim-blaming and harmful myths. In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction after deciding that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them, thereby implying consent. Enraged by the verdict, the women of the Italian Parliament launched an immediate protest by wearing jeans to work and to the steps of the Supreme Court. For the nearly 30 years since, Denim Day has served as an international visual symbol of support for survivors and protest against sexual assault and victim-blaming. There is never an excuse or invitation to sexually harass, abuse or assault. Wear your jeans proudly today to help create a culture of consent and respect.
