One of the best parts of policing is seeing people doing well after a difficult day.

This weekend, one of our officers was invited to celebrate a young lady’s 13th birthday. Officer Engelking first met her more than a year ago while working patrol during a critical incident. He and other Salem officers located her and took a suspect into custody.

Recently, her father stopped by our Coffee with a Cop event at Don Froylan Creamery to thank the officers and asked if Officer Engleking could attend her birthday. We were honored to be included in the celebration and grateful the family took the time to reconnect.

Officer Engleking now serves on our Homeless Services Team and is also a member of our Bomb Squad and Peer Support Team.

Every day is White Cane Safety Day, but today we officially recognize this important occasion.

This past Monday, Salem Mayor Julie Hoy proudly read a Proclamation declaring October 15 as White Cane Safety Day in Salem. Several blind and low vision community members were in attendance to show their support and help raise awareness about promoting safety for visually impaired individuals as they received the proclamation.

Established by Congress in 1964, White Cane Safety Day raises awareness about the significance of the white cane and promotes safer travel for people who are blind or visually impaired. For drivers, this means being vigilant every day, watching for white canes and guide dogs, and following Oregon law (ORS 811.035), which requires drivers to stop and remain stopped until pedestrians using a white cane or guide dog have safely crossed the street.

On this White Cane Safety Day, the Salem Police Department urges all drivers to prioritize pedestrian safety and stay alert for white canes and guide dogs, not just today but every day!
