We followed the yellow brick road all the way to Salem Police Departmentโ€™s Halloween Dress Rehearsal!

Our Oz crew showed up in full costume: Operations Manager Andi as Glinda, plus Communications Specialists Teresita as Elphaba, Paige as Dorothy, and John as the Cowardly Lion (who was very brave around all the kiddos).

Thank you, Salem PD, for having us at this year's Halloween Dress Rehearsal! The kids showed off their costumes, practiced their trick-or-treating, and picked up some safety tips before the big night.

Whatever road you follow this Halloween, we're here if you need us.

We are heartbroken for the families of the children and teacher lost at Silver Rail Elementary School, for the school, and for everyone in the community grieving today, including our fellow first responders in Deschutes County.

With love from your neighbors in the valley and on the coast.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Monthโ€”two causes that remind us that some of lifeโ€™s hardest battles are fought quietly.

As 911 professionals, we talk to people during some of the most frightening, painful, and uncertain moments of their lives. We hear the fear. We hear the heartbreak. We hear the courage it takes to ask for help.

But behind every headset is a person, too.

We are mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, spouses, partners, friends, survivors, caregivers, and supporters. We are people who have facedโ€”or are currently facingโ€”some of the very same tragedies and traumas as the people who call us.

We are here for you on your worst days, and we are there for each other on ours.

This month, we stand with those fighting breast cancer, those who have survived it, and the families who have walked beside them. ๐ŸŽ€

We also stand with survivors of domestic violence, those still finding the courage or opportunity to seek help, and those working to build a safer future. ๐Ÿ’œ

If you need help, please know: you are worth the call. You deserve to be heard. You deserve support.

At WVCC, helping people is more than what we doโ€”itโ€™s why we put on the headset.

We hear you. We care. We are here. ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’œ

What a great day at the Salem Fire Department Station 6 Open House!

WVCC had so much fun getting out from behind the headsets and spending time with our community. From fire engines and ladder trucks to future little firefighters, 911 education, photos, and plenty of smilesโ€”there was something for everyone!

Events like this are such a great reminder that public safety is truly a team effort. We may be the voices you hear when you call 911, but weโ€™re proud to work alongside the firefighters, medics, law enforcement officers, and community members who make it all happen.

A huge THANK YOU to Salem Fire Station 6 for inviting us to be part of the fun and to everyone who stopped by the WVCC table to say hello, learn a little about 911, and snap a photo with us!

We had a BLAST! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ“žโค๏ธ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿšจ

Congrats to Teresita R, Janean D, John T, and Paige H on finishing WVCC's 6 week in-house academy and passing their final with flying colors.

Six weeks of classroom training down. Next stop is the floor, taking real calls alongside a Communications Training Officer. Good luck to all four as they jump into shift work, continue training, and put everything they learned to use on every call.

Drop a congrats below for these four.

Some of our own were honored at the Oregon APCO/NENA Awards Banquet in Bend on September 30th, and we're ecstatic! (See photo captions for the full story on each award)

Given for actions that directly save a life. On her way to work, Kaylee came across a vehicle versus pedestrian crash. Still in training, she pulled over and started CPR. The patient was breathing and conscious before responders arrived. Then she came in and finished her shift.

A statewide award for handling a major incident far beyond normal activity, and only up to three are given each year. On June 1, 2025, this team handled the mass stabbing at the Union Gospel Mission, where 11 people were hurt. They coordinated a multi-agency response while still covering calls across three counties. In under 26 minutes, 11 victims were transported, and every victim survived.

Shoutout to Maggie G., who earned Lifesaving and Critical Incident nominations, and to Elizabeth O. and Katelyn S. for their Critical Incident nomination.

Most of this work goes unseen, but we see it. So proud of this team. ๐Ÿ’›

Thank you to the Oregon Chapter of APCO/NENA for recognizing them and members of the WVCC staff that nominated these individuals. Also special thanks to Salem Fire Chief Gerboth, Deputy Chief Leavell, Ops Manager Tobin, and Supervisor Tiburski for showing their support for the team at the event.

You only get one shot, one opportunityโ€ฆ to know where you are. ๐Ÿ“

Okay, maybe not literally one shot. Weโ€™re gonna keep asking until we figure it out.

When you call 9-1-1, one of the most important things we need is your location. An exact address is best, but street names, intersections, businesses, landmarks, highway mile markers, trail signs, or anything else nearby can help us narrow it down.

Your phone may provide location information, but it may not be accurate.

Palms sweaty. Knees weak. Calls are heavy.

Have your location ready. Or whatever Eminem saidโ€ฆ

Gold stars all around for the folks who make our job a little easier. โญ

These might seem small, but they add up fast. Every one of them helps us get the right help to the right place quicker, and keeps our lines open for the next person who needs us.

How many stars are you collecting?

If you have a monitored residential or commercial alarm system, this oneโ€™s for you. Your alarm goes off at 2:00 a.m. The monitoring company calls 911 and tells us, โ€œAlarm activation, Zone 12.โ€ Okayโ€ฆ where is Zone 12?

Alarm systems use zones to identify different sensors or areas around a home or business, like a front door, warehouse motion detector, office window, or rear entrance. When those zones have clear descriptions, your alarm company can give 911 much more useful information about where the activation happened. Check with your alarm provider and make sure your zone descriptions are accurate and specific. โ€œFront Doorโ€ or โ€œRear Warehouse Motionโ€ tells responders a lot more than โ€œZone 12.โ€

A quick check now can help your alarm company, 911, and responding crews get better information when something actually happens.
