Last week was Digital Equity Week, and Oregon celebrated in a big way 🎉. The Oregon Broadband Office a division of Business Oregon, announced that Digital Connectivity Technology Program (DCTP) grantees completed their projects. Collectively they made 1,058 lending devices available, established 10 public computing labs, served 12 respective communities, and provided free public Wi-Fi in 7 locations!

Three Oregon libraries participated in this program: Pendleton Public Library, Josephine Community Library District, and Sweet Home Public Library. A big shout out to all 13 DCTP grantees that expanded access to technology and Wi-Fi at no cost to the community members who needed it the most.

Oregon libraries are committed to ensuring Oregonians have access to a variety of high-quality information through their collections, programs, and services. Since 1987, the State Library of Oregon has collected information about intellectual freedom challenges at libraries across the state. This annual report highlights the work of libraries in continuing to ensure collections and services represent the people they serve.

The Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse (OIFC) 2026 report summarizes challenges from the previous fiscal year: July 2025-June 2026.

"I think people don’t realize what they want from their library until it starts to be under threat, or until it goes away. I don’t know how we can get away from people seeing libraries as quiet spaces. I’ve been doing this work for 30 years and it’s never been quiet."
Stephanie Chase, Baker City, Ore.

Congratulations Ericka on winning and Advocacy Award from the Joint Council of Librarians of Color (JCLC). The honor was given to her by the Black Caucus of the ALA. The Advocacy Award recognizes folks who demonstrate outstanding commitment to advancing library and information services for the profession and communities of color.

Ericka has always been an asset to the Oregon Library Community. And in her time at that State Library, she continues to support Oregon Libraries and Oregonians.

It's Banned Books Week, an annual awareness effort launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores.

Last week, we released the annual OIFC report detailing challenges in libraries across the state between July 2025 – June 2026. The number of items challenged over that period are the third highest since 1987. You can read the full report along with a list of the challenges here: https://slo.oregon.gov/oifc/challenges
