This page was created to share information and highlight the activities of our organization. Members of the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office are committed to providing the highest standard of service to our community and to the tens of thousands of visitors to our county each year. We recognize and profoundly appreciate the unique character of our valley home and its diversity of opportunities for recreation, learning, and culture. As residents of the community ourselves, we understand that our mission requires that we perform not solely as enforcers of the law but as peace keepers, dispute mediators, and problem solvers as well.
**We reserve the right to remove any comments that are vulgar or disrespectful.
**Our patches are purchased through the county general fund from taxpayer revenues. Regrettably, the increased costs of patches prohibit us from honoring requests for them.

We are happy to report that the suspect who fired upon law enforcement and a tow truck operator in Custer County is in custody. No civilians or law enforcement were injured. Please see the briefing video by Custer County Sheriff Rich Smith for further details. We are proud of our tactical team members who responded to assist and helped end this tense standoff peacefully with no injuries to the suspect. Another testament to their dedicated training.

On Friday May 1st, 2026, at about 10:00PM Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Caleb Wroten was performing routine traffic enforcement on Trout Creek Pass in Chaffee County when he observed a motorist traveling at 85 Miles Per Hour in a posted 55 Mile Per Hour Zone. Deputy Wroten activated his emergency lights and siren but the vehicle refused to stop.

A pursuit was initiated for several miles with speeds in excess of 90MPH. Deputy Wroten lost sight of the vehicle for a short time but it was found on a county road a short time later by another deputy at which time the driver was apprehended.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Angel Parra Andrade age 24 from Flagstaff Arizona. Two passengers in the vehicle were identified as juvenile relatives of Andrade’s. Those juveniles were turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Andrade was transported to the Chaffee County Detention Center where he was held on a $2,000.00 bond for the charges of Vehicular Eluding (class 5 felony), Reckless Endangerment (class 2 misdemeanor), two counts of Child Abuse (class 2 misdemeanors) and Speeding 25 to 39 Over the Posted Speed Limit (class 2 traffic misdemeanor).

On October 6th, 2026, Andrade accepted a plea agreement in Chaffee County District Court. Andrade plead guilty to Vehicular Eluding (traffic offense) and speeding 25 to 39 over the posted speed limit (traffic offense). All other charges were dismissed. Andrade was sentenced to 10 days jail (suspended), given a 12 month deferred sentence, and ordered to pay a $200.00 fine.

Sentencing outcomes are mandatorily driven by considerations of all factors in each case such as: criminal history or lack thereof, victim input and willingness to testify, community safety, litigation resources, investigations errors, prosecution errors, and defendant mental health and pre-existing trauma issues.

Earlier this year the Salida Gun Shop opened its heart to us at the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office by raising funds through a donation program to purchase Canine Deputy Jaxson a ballistic and stab proof vest. The amount raised in a short period of time thanks to the outpour of support from customers visiting the store was approximately $2,500.00, which fully covered the purchase price of the vest. We are especially grateful to owners Josiah Nierman and Adam Nelson along with employee Jenna Victoria for brainstorming this heartfelt project.

As we have all seen, sadly too often, in recent times, canines are getting critically wounded in the field in law enforcement environments. Canines are critical to our operations and loved by our staff just like any other fellow employee or family member. Canines don’t consider their own safety to complete a mission out of loyalty to their handler and team so it is critical that we take every step we can, doing our part, to protect them before they enter the field. The equipment needed is expensive and can become burdensome for the taxpayers, which is another reason we are so grateful for this donation from the Salida Gun Shop.

Although Deputy Jaxson's role as a peer support canine with the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office is not as dangerous as other canine roles in law enforcement, Deputy Jaxson is in the public daily doing his job surrounded by law enforcement. Since Deputy Jaxson was 8 weeks old, he has been alongside his handler, Undersheriff Alex Walker, all over the state of Colorado and in our local community representing the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.

Thank you again to all the customers who did business at the Salida Gun Shop and donated to keep Deputy Jaxson safe.

Update: Holly Lewis has been arrested and is in custody

On 10-01-26 The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to multiple fraudulent checks that were being cashed at a local Salida/ Chaffee County bank. Shortly after meeting with the banking officials and the victim, Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Johnny Mitchell was contacted by the bank asking him to return as the suspect was currently there trying to cash another fraudulent check.

Deputy Mitchell responded back to the bank and contacted the suspect who was identified as Anthony Plese aged 59 from Buena Vista, CO. Plese was immediately taken into custody by Deputy Mitchell. Plese’s vehicle was later searched, and evidence was found (other financial documents) that suggested there may be other victims.

Plese was transported to the Chaffee County Jail where he was held on a $250.00 bond for Criminal Possession of a Financial Device (class 5 Felony), 13 counts of Forgery (Class 5 Felonies), and 12 counts of Theft (Petty Offenses).

The investigation continued for the next several days and a second suspect was identified. The female suspect, Holly Lewis aged 48 from Buena Vista, CO, was found to be in a relationship with Plese. It was alleged that Lewis befriended several Chaffee County residents (some considered at risk adults) at different times leading to the access of the victim’s property. It was further alleged that she would then steal the victim’s banking information and/or checks. Plese would then try to cash the checks which he successfully did on multiple occasions.

On 10-11-26 Deputy Mitchell got an arrest warrant for Lewis for the charges of Criminal Possession of a Financial Device (class 5 Felony), 13 counts of Forgery (Class 5 Felonies), 12 counts of Theft (Petty Offenses), and 2 counts of Crimes Against an at Risk Adult (Class 3 Felonies). The District Court Judge signed the arrest warrant and attached a $5,000.00 bond.

As of the time of this release, Lewis has not been arrested and is still wanted by law enforcement. If you have any information about her current whereabouts, please contact the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office at 719-539-2596. Lewis and Plese are both assumed/ considered innocent unless/ until proven guilty in a court of law.

Please use caution if dealing with either party or inviting them into your home. If you, or anyone you know, is a victim please contact the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.

We have received multiple complaints about an unsolicited caller contacting residents claiming to be Undersheriff Alex Walker with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office. The caller alleges that the person receiving the call has a warrant and needs to pay a fine. This is a scam. Please do not provide personal or financial information over the phone to unsolicited callers. Law enforcement will not solicit funds from you over the phone.
