AI and the Future of Agriculture in Monterey County

Artificial intelligence and robotics are making their way into Monterey County agriculture, but the transition won’t happen overnight.

At the recent “AI & the Future of Our Region” summit at CSU Monterey Bay, Timothy Koide of Salinas-based Reservoir Farms discussed how growers are exploring automation to address labor shortages and improve agricultural operations. High equipment costs, reliability, and the realities of working farm environments, however, remain significant barriers to widespread adoption.

As new technologies become part of one of Monterey County’s most important industries, they also raise important questions about how agricultural jobs and the skills needed to perform them may evolve.

For our workforce, understanding these changes will be an important part of preparing for the jobs and opportunities of the future.

Workforce Partnerships in Action: Joby Aviation

High-tech manufacturing is creating new career opportunities right here in Monterey County.

Joby Aviation’s expanded 435,500-square-foot pilot production facility in Marina is designed to produce up to 24 aircraft each year, bringing new jobs and opportunities to the region. The company is currently recruiting for positions that include Composite Parts Technicians, Quality Inspectors, Equipment Technicians, and more.

Behind that growth are workforce partnerships helping local residents prepare for these careers. Monterey County Works, the Monterey County Workforce Development Board, and Monterey Bay DART are working with Joby to connect residents with training and hands-on experience.

Through a six-month Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship, more than 70 participants have completed training, with 90% moving into full-time positions at Joby. Monterey County Works has also placed more than 23 young adults in summer internships over the past three years, giving them an opportunity to shadow technicians and gain exposure to aerospace manufacturing and logistics.

This is workforce development in action: bringing employers, training partners, and local talent together to create pathways to growing careers.
