September 2026 President’s Message

Happy September, everyone. I hope your summer was eventful and you had time to spend on the water. I’ve had the pleasure of fishing in the bay, but not with my fly rod. The Halibut bite has been pretty good around 4 Mile (north of Santa Cruz), as was the lingcod bite.

This month's outing was scheduled for the Sacramento River the weekend of the 19th. I just got word that Dave Gambetta, who volunteered to be fish master, can’t make it, so at this point it looks like this outing may be canceled. We’ll have more info at the meeting on Wednesday.

At our last board meeting, we created a three-person committee to nominate new board members. This is in our bylaws, and it is designed to get new involvement and fresh ideas into our board of directors. Please consider serving on the board at whatever level you feel comfortable with!

For this month’s meeting, guide Alex Ferber will give a presentation on fishing the Sacramento River. I have fished the Fall River with Alex. He is a great guide and definitely put us on fish. Hope to see everyone at the meeting and hear about your fishing adventures.

August 2026 President’s Message

Greetings everyone. Summer is in full swing, and I hope everyone has had a chance to fish. As I write this, I am at the top of a mountain for the opening of deer season. Don’t know if anyone does much ocean fishing, but the forecast for our area should be promising with the El Niño water temperatures. A good friend just came back from an overnight fishing trip in SoCal. They caught bluefin, dorado, and other species that you normally find in the warmer Gulf waters.
The Muddy Classic was a great event. I want to thank and acknowledge the work and donations from Jay Jefferson, Rick McCombs and family, Greg and Nikki Smith, Loren and Rick Kitamura, Fred Farias, and of course Molly, who keeps us all focused in the right direction.
Alex Ferber from the Santa Cruz Fly Fishing Club will be hosting several Spey casting lessons starting soon. We will talk about the dates and times at the meeting this Wednesday evening. We will also talk about a couple of new places for fishing outings for next year. The board would really like to hear from the club members about future outing locations.
I’m going to have to cut this month's message short; my buddy is shooting at something, and hopefully he didn’t miss.
See everyone at the meeting!

July 2026 President’s Message

Happy July, everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July and celebrated our Country’s 250th birthday. It doesn’t seem like it was long ago that we were celebrating the bicentennial, but I guess it was 😂.

July 11 is the Muddy River Classic at Jefferson Ranch. We will again be having the Taco Truck folks providing the main course. They made great food last year and brought lots of it, so please bring your appetite. Rick and Greg have great raffle prizes. There will also be a few competitions (as I’m writing this, the USA just lost to Belgium in soccer. It's a good thing I didn’t type the words that just came out of my mouth). *%^ #$@ #$!!

The last month has been pretty busy, but I did manage to spend a day drifting the American River for shad. I fished with Jeremy Wright from Wright's fly fishing. Lots of fish were caught. I hope everyone else has had the opportunity to get out and fish.

Next May, I’m hoping to add a club outing to Duck Valley. It’s an Indian reservation on the northeast side of Nevada and crosses into Idaho. It’s float tube fishing, or boats. Indicator and dry flies. The fish are very healthy-sized and very plentiful. We will talk about it and do a presentation at an upcoming meeting.

Hope to see everyone on Saturday!

June 2026 President’s Message

Happy June, everyone. The weather is heating up and so are our opportunities to get out and fish. The club went to Pyramid for a few days and tried fishing in warm weather and out of float tubes. We also had a boat to fish from and explore the lake. At times the wind kicked up, but there was usually a calm part of the lake. I spent a little time at Pelican in the boat mapping out the fishing area. It’s really amazing how shallow it is. We ate well, drank well, and, of course, Chuck had a great campfire each night.

On July 11th, there will be the annual “Muddy River Classic” get-together at the Jefferson Ranch. It will start at noon. We will have the taco vendor making food again this year, the “Dutch Oven Cobbler Cook-Off " and raffle. If the wind permits, we will have a casting competition and a fly-tying competition. The cost is 15 per person and kids under 12 are free. I hope everyone can make it.

I have been hearing some very promising fishing reports. The Fall River, Truckee River and East Carson have been producing good fish. The club is working on a Kelly Lake and/ or O’Neill Fore Bay trip, as well as a Lower Sac drift trip. More info will be coming soon.

Hope everyone finds time to fish and enjoy the outdoors.

Hope to see you all July 11th…….. Frank
