Keep these three simple litter prevention tips in mind to stay !

𝗕𝗮𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵: Make sure garbage is securely bagged and tied shut, and avoid overfilling your curbside cart. Strong winds can turn loose garbage into litter, carrying it into storm drains and eventually polluting our creeks, rivers, and Monterey Bay. Bagging your trash also helps prevent litter from blowing around our landfill once it arrives at ReGen Monterey.

𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘁: Keep your curbside cart lids fully closed to prevent materials from escaping during storms. Remember, recyclables, food scraps, and yard trimmings should always be placed loose in your blue recycling and green organics carts, not in bags.

𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱: Bringing materials to ReGen Monterey? Make sure your load is properly covered and secured before hitting the road. Unsecured materials can become roadside litter, creating hazards for drivers and polluting our environment. Uncovered loads may be charged double.

A little preparation before the storm can make a big difference in keeping our communities and waterways clean! 🌊

Got concrete? We’ll take it! ♻️🪨

Yesterday’s concrete can become the foundation for tomorrow’s roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and construction projects. It’s a great example of the circular economy in action, where materials once considered waste are given new life, conserving natural resources and reducing the need for newly quarried materials.

Besides putting recycled concrete back to work in local construction projects, we also make good use of it right here at ReGen Monterey:

Our landfill is constantly being reshaped and sculpted. We build our own roads as the location where garbage trucks unload can change from day to day. And we spend months preparing for the rainy season to make sure operations can continue safely, rain or shine.

One way we do that is by building what we call a “wet weather pad.” By layering crushed concrete and rock beneath the surface, we create a sturdy foundation that can support heavy equipment, garbage trucks, and semi-trucks even when the surrounding ground is wet and muddy. This allows vehicles to safely travel across the landfill and unload their waste during winter storms.

It’s one more way yesterday’s waste helps us tackle tomorrow’s challenges!

🎃 Here’s your to think about where your pumpkins will end up this Halloween season!

We LOVE seeing colorful pumpkins roll out of garbage trucks and into our composting yard this time of year! It means residents understand that jack-o’-lanterns don’t belong in the landfill, where decomposing organic material generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Instead, these nutrient-rich gourds become part of the perfect recipe for rich compost that helps nourish the soil at local farms.

Here’s a frightening fact: More than 1 BILLION pounds of pumpkins are sent to landfills across the United States each year! 😱 That’s a scary amount of perfectly compostable material going to waste.

So, as you carve your pumpkins this Halloween, remember that the stringy innards, seeds and scraps all belong in your green organics cart. And when your jack-o’-lantern has had its moment in the spooky spotlight, compost that too! Just remove candles, lights and other decorations first.

This Halloween, let’s make sure our pumpkins have a sustainable ending ♻️

The Monterey County Illegal Dumping and Litter Abatement Task Force (IDLATF) meets monthly to strategize ways to educate the public, strengthen enforcement, and eliminate illegal dumping and littering in our beautiful communities. 🌎

Illegal dumping comes at a cost to all of us, threatening public health and safety, property values, quality of life, our environment, and even food safety. We’re committed to tackling this problem together.

And every quarter, we put our words into action! 💪 Task force members roll up their sleeves and organize a cleanup at a local litter hotspot. Last week, we headed to the railroad tracks in lovely Pajaro, where some of the most common items we collected included single-use plastic food containers and packaging, debris from car crashes, and discarded clothing.

Want to be part of the solution? Learn how to organize your own community cleanup with free disposal vouchers, sign up for our illegal dumping newsletter, report illegal dumping, and more at KeepMontereyCountyClean.org.

Thank you to our friends on the IDLATF for always showing up for our communities!

Remember any of these old computers and television sets? Did you have one growing up? Is it still gathering dust in your garage? 📺🖨️💻📠

🚫 It’s , and here’s your regular reminder that electronic devices don’t belong in your curbside garbage or recycling carts! 🚫

Electronic waste is harmful to the environment and poses serious safety risks to frontline workers at waste management facilities like ours due to the hazardous materials and batteries they contain, which can cause dangerous fires when damaged.

If you’ve still got some old electronics collecting dust, bring them to ReGen Monterey or your nearest e-waste drop-off center! We accept electronic waste for FREE at our drop-off facility.

We accept old and broken computers, hard drives, laptops, cables, circut boards, televisions, printers, cell phones, mobile devices, and more.

Keep electronic waste out of your curbside carts and help protect our workers, facilities, and environment. ♻️

A visit to a public composting facility can be eye-opening. 👀🍉

What looks like a colorful pile of fruits and vegetables quickly becomes a sea of food waste when you zoom out, and this is just a sliver of what our community discards.

The good news? These food scraps were diverted from the landfill thanks to California’s landmark SB 1383, which requires food scraps to go into your green curbside cart so they can be composted instead of landfilled. Here at ReGen Monterey, we’re proud to help close the loop locally, with 100% of our finished compost returning to local farms.

But composting is the next-best option. Preventing food waste in the first place is even better.

An estimated 40% of food in the United States goes uneaten, with households responsible for nearly half of that waste. We can all help reduce it with a few mindful habits:

🍓 Shop with a plan: Check your refrigerator and pantry before shopping, make a list and buy only what you expect to use.

🥕 Use what you have first: Plan meals around foods that need to be eaten soon and keep them visible so they aren’t forgotten in the back of the fridge.

🍌 Give food a second chance: Freeze extras, save leftovers and find creative uses for produce that’s past its prime but still safe to eat.

Composting keeps food out of the landfill and helps build healthy soil. Preventing food waste goes one step further: saving the water, energy, land, labor and money that went into producing that food in the first place.

Good morning, it’s ! 🤍☕️🤍

The best way to enjoy coffee is in a reusable mug.

95 THOUSAND single-use cups are thrown away EVERY MINUTE in the US 😩🤯😩

What makes it worse is that these cups aren’t recyclable or compostable. They go straight to the landfill where they persist for years.

Coffee may make you feel better each morning, but you can feel even better knowing your reusable cup has an impact locally. With so many coffee shops in Monterey County, imagine how much landfill space we can conserve each day if we used reusables.

It’s the start of the week! Here’s your to get your stretches in before the week ahead. 💪🧘

Our heavy equipment operators start every shift with a stretching and calisthenics routine, an important part of preparing for the physically demanding work they do every day.

Operating a landfill compactor means maneuvering a 100,000+ pound machine up, down and over piles of trash and constantly shifting terrain for hours at a time. Even while seated, operators are continually steering, turning, looking in multiple directions and responding to the movement and vibration of the equipment beneath them.

Taking a few minutes to stretch helps our operators prepare their bodies for the work ahead and is one small part of our larger commitment to working safely.

Whether you’re sitting at a desk, operating heavy equipment or working out in the field, a good stretch is a great way to start the work week healthy, safe and motivated!
