I’ll have the activity room open all week with a variety of self-serve stations with Halloween crafts, games and activities. I think we should make these these.

Today “Growing Together Garden Club began putting things to bed for the season and planted some garlic for spring. Garlic is a bulb and bulbs need a longer growing season and sleeping under ground in winter is an important part of their growth process. We discussed seed saving and compost and left our sunflowers in the ground to let the plant die naturally and the seeds cure on the plant in order to have viable seeds to replant. This also encourages self seeding and gives wildlife something to snack on. Did you ever notice the amazing spiral design the seeds create in the center of a sunflower? Do you know what it’s called? Connor did! He knew it was an example of the Fibonacci sequence. I’m not sure what’s cooler. The fact that Connor called it out or the sunflower itself. 🤯 So cool!
We discovered a few calendula plants finally started to flower along with a fragrant little sweet pea flower and some new pods so the kids learned that some crops like cooler temps so they sometimes make a little comeback this time of year. There was also a convenient example of a shriveled up pea pod with perfectly dried seeds inside ready for harvesting to save for replanting next year. It’s amazing how many teaching moments there are in a garden with a such a small footprint. I already can’t wait for next season! Thank you again to Toms discount, Coast of Maine Soil, the Friends of the library and Farmer John for helping support our program!
