Let’s be clear: US Wind is NOT canceling its offshore wind project off the Eastern Shore.
The Sparrows Point facility was intended to manufacture offshore wind components for projects across the entire East Coast, not just ours.
With the Trump Administration creating uncertainty and delaying future offshore wind development, it simply makes no financial sense to keep paying for a manufacturing site without enough projects to supply. That’s a business decision, not the death of offshore wind.
Unfortunately, Maryland is losing out on over 3,100 of good-paying manufacturing jobs and millions in planned investment because of this uncertainty.
Meanwhile, the offshore wind project off our coast remains federally approved, despite ongoing litigation.
Working families on the Eastern Shore need more affordable energy, good-paying jobs, and real investment in our communities. We shouldn’t be celebrating the loss of American manufacturing jobs while families are struggling to make ends meet.
US Wind, the company behind a proposed offshore wind farm off the coast of Ocean City, no longer plans to develop components for wind turbines at Sparrows Point — at least not for now — turning its lease over to Anduril Industries to build a shipyard there.
