As of this afternoon, October 22, 2026, the full functionality of the Idaho Fish and Game website has been replaced with a minimal, static webpage. This decision was made as a proactive measure to minimize the risk of a potential security vulnerability.

The website still provides critical information for hunters and anglers, including seasons and rules brochures, public comment opportunities, access to our licensing website, hunter education opportunities, and IDFG contact information.

If you cannot locate information or features on the IDFG website that are critical for you, please contact any of our IDFG offices, and we would be happy to help.

Thank you for your patience as we work to ensure the IDFG website remains safe, stable, and reliable. To receive up-to-date information on the status of the website, follow us on Facebook, X, Instagram, and Threads.

**UPDATE** Both juvenile bears were trapped and euthanized. Additional details will be released in an upcoming press release.

Around 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 2 two residents of the Sunset Heights subdivision near Salmon were attacked by a juvenile black bear.

Both individuals sustained injuries and one was transported by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls to be treated for his injuries. Idaho Fish and Game was notified by the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office and mobilized the IDFG Wildlife Human Attack Response Team to secure the scene. The black bears, believed to be a sow with two juveniles, were no longer on site and so a professional houndsman was brought in to track them. The sow has been killed and IDFG officers remain onsite for the foreseeable future to locate and euthanize the juveniles. Additional details will be forthcoming as they are available.

Salmon Region helicopter flights treating invasive cheatgrass begin Monday Oct. 5.

Hunters and recreationists should be aware of low-flying helicopters spraying herbicide in the Dry Gulch, Marco Creek, and Jimmy Smith Lake areas of the East Fork Salmon River as well as the Morgan and Trail Creek drainages in the Pahsimeroi valley. Cheatgrass is reducing big game winter range quality and increasing wildfire risk in these areas.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Bureau of Land Management, Idaho Department of Lands, and Mule Deer Foundation are partnering to treat 3,800 acres of important winter range for deer, elk, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep. Treatments are scheduled to begin Oct. 5 and will take approximately five days to complete with favorable weather conditions.

Cheatgrass is highly flammable and treatments will reduce future wildfire risk and support the recovery of native plants that are important for wildlife. Fall is the most effective time to treat cheatgrass while minimizing impacts to native plants. Although the timing of treatments can affect hunters and other recreationists, the reduced wildfire risk and long-term benefits for big game and other wildlife outweigh the short-term inconvenience.

Treatment areas are outlined in the maps below. To learn more, contact IDFG Regional Wildlife Biologist Bret Stansberry at 208-756-2271.

Salmon Outdoor Classroom Osprey Camera to be turned off Oct. 1, 2026 through Mar. 1, 2027.

Launched in April of 2026, the Osprey Camera at the Outdoor Classroom in Salmon provided viewers with front row seats to the day-to-day lives of osprey. There was immediate excitement on camera with three females vying for the prized nest location. One of the females attempting to claim the nest was banded near Emigrant, Montana and was seen in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, over 450 miles from Salmon!

Ultimately, it was the original pair that successfully defended the site and built their nest. Eggs were laid in mid-May and three youngsters hatched in mid-June. Dad diligently provided fish for the voracious and rapidly growing chicks. Mom sheltered the chicks from the cold and wet, and shaded them from the hot, baking sun.

Sometimes nature can be hard to watch. Unfortunately, one chick was pulled from the nest by baling twine attached to the female’s leg. IDFG responded and verified it did not survive the fall. Baling twine is an attractive nesting material for osprey, however it can lead to entanglement and death of both chicks and adults. Removing twine from the nest can be done when birds are not present but comes with significant risk when they are present. IDFG and Idaho Power removed baling twine once during the nesting season, but the osprey continued to bring twine into the nest. The only way to reduce this threat long term is by cleaning up twine from the landscape so it is not available to osprey.

The two remaining chicks grew and quickly became fledglings, regularly testing their wings. The fledglings made their first test flights in mid-Aug. The youngsters now look more like their parents and soon the osprey family will separate and fly to South America to escape the cold winter of Salmon. If both parents survive winter, they will likely reunite in Salmon to raise their young again. The city of Salmon, and osprey fans from all over, will be waiting for them.

While the ospreys are wintering in South America, the Osprey Camera will be turned off Oct. 1, 2026 through Mar. 1, 2027. Before next spring, IDFG and partners will perform maintenance on the nest platform and remove remaining bailing twine. This project couldn’t have been done without the generous donations of time, expertise, and funding from the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Salmon Valley Stewardship, Idaho Power, CusterTel, SteamWorld, and K12.Tech.

🚁UPDATE.🚁 Aerial w**d treatments completed in Hayden Creek drainage of Unit 29.

🌿On Sept. 22, crews finished treating 9,300 acres of cheatgrass and noxious w**ds in the Hayden Creek drainage. Treatments were part of fire rehabilitation efforts after the 2023 Hayden Fire to reduce wildfire risk and protect wildlife habitat.🌿

Salmon Region helicopter flights treating invasive cheatgrass and noxious w**ds begin September 14

Hunters and recreationists should be aware of low-flying helicopters spraying herbicide within the Hayden Creek drainage of Unit 29. Treatments will help combat the spread of invasive annual grass and noxious w**ds after the 2023 Hayden Fire. Treatments are scheduled to begin September 14 and will take approximately 5 days to complete.

The Salmon-Challis National Forest, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and Idaho Fish and Game, is leading the charge to prevent invasive plants from becoming established after the Hayden Fire burned over 24,000 acres of important deer and elk habitat in 2023. Treatments are part of fire rehabilitation efforts to reduce future wildfire risk and support the recovery of native plants important to wildlife.

Fall is the most effective time to treat cheatgrass while minimizing impacts to important native plants. Treatments are effective for several years, which gives native plants time to recover and compete with cheatgrass and noxious w**ds. Although the timing of treatments affect hunters and other recreationists, the reduced wildfire risk and long-term benefits for big game and other wildlife outweigh the short-term inconvenience.

Treatment areas are outlined in the map below. To learn more, see the Salmon-Challis National Forest press release on their website https://www.fs.usda.gov/r04/salmon-challis/newsroom/releases/aerial-w**d-treatments-planned-hayden-creek-drainage-mid-0
