Once Upon a Camel by Kathi Appelt, 322 pages. Atheneum, 2021. $18

Zada, a very old camel, was born in Smyrna, Turkey. While Zada was still young, she was given as a gift, along with all her friends, to the U.S. Army and transported in a boat across the Atlantic. Zada helped the army transport goods from Texas to California and back. One day Zada and her best friend were set free. They stayed together and wandered by themselves.

I had no idea that the army actually used camels in Texas. It was called the "Great Camel Experiment." There are still rumors that there are wild camels in Texas. This was a most amazing book. I loved it and I recommend it to everyone I talk to as it is a great read aloud for a class. One of my favorite reads this year.

Spring break was AMAZING. I met George Takei at the U today. He talked about his “They Called Us Enemy”. Come see the autographed copy in the library on Monday. Start making your summer reading list and begin with a memoir like this one!

I’m at the Glenwood Cemetery! It’s the first burial ground in Houston that was arranged by a professional. They even got a horticulturist involved. It’s beautiful! Take a look around a cemetery sometime. This one has beautiful statuary. I’m reading A Rabbit’s Tale by Maryrose Wood.

Hi Everyone! I’m at The Beer Can House in Houston, Texas! John Milkovisch turned his house into an art installation between 1968 - 1988. It’s really neat! I’m reading book 2 - The City. Next time you visit a big city, find an unusual tourist attraction like I did!
