Salt Lake County is making real progress helping people with behavioral health needs through the Behavioral Health and Justice Action Plan. Here’s what’s new:

New Housing — Odyssey House, First Step House, and VOA recently opened new housing and transitional beds for around 100 people with serious behavioral health needs. Thank you to everyone working to help our community!

Connecting to Treatment — Teams are working together and sharing information better to help people get treatment, so no one falls through the cracks.

Helping Kids and Teens — Schools, community partners, and families are getting more help preventing drug and alcohol problems through evidence-based programming. We distributed over 1,000 free gun safes to keep families safe. We are expanding programs to connect young people with mentorship, education, community resources, and positive opportunities.

It’s United Against Hate Week. Last Week, I joined the Salt Lake County Council, Sheriff Rosie Rivera, District Attorney Sim Gill, and community leaders to sign a joint proclamation recognizing October 18-24 as United Against Hate Week in Salt Lake County.

The proclamation calls on all residents to stand together against hate, promote understanding and respect, support those affected by hate and bias, and help build a county where every person can live safely, with dignity and respect.

We remain committed to building communities grounded in safety, kindness, and mutual respect, recognizing that it takes intentional effort from residents, community organizations, schools, faith communities, businesses, and public institutions alike.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community. By speaking up, working together, and treating one another with respect, we can help keep Salt Lake County safe and welcoming for everyone.

The Roadless Rule has protected 30,000 acres of roadless lands in our canyons for 25 years, that’s 2x larger than Manhattan.

The federal government is now considering rescinding this rule. Mayor Wilson’s Office has submitted a formal comment in opposition.

Why it matters: Utah’s outdoor economy is worth $9.5 billion, and the rule protects activities like hiking, camping, biking, climbing, backcountry skiing, fishing, and hunting that depend on road-free terrain. Events like the 2034 Olympic Games choose Salt Lake County for our recreation economy and reputation, directly tied to the quality of our backcountry terrain.

Rescinding the rule wouldn’t mean immediate construction in our canyons, but it would remove a consistent baseline protection for our outdoor recreation economy, leaving long-term uncertainty for how these lands are managed.

The Roadless Rule has protected 30,000 acres of roadless lands in our canyons for 25 years — that’s over 35x the size of Central Park.

The federal government is now considering rescinding this rule. Mayor Wilson’s Office has submitted a formal comment in opposition.

Why it matters: 400,000 residents rely on drinking water that starts in these canyons, and the rule protects the watershed supplying 60% of Salt Lake City’s water. Roads bring erosion, pollution, and higher treatment costs — our residents shouldn’t have to pay more for clean water.

Rescinding the rule wouldn’t mean immediate construction in our canyons, but it would remove a consistent baseline protection for water resources and open space, leaving long-term uncertainty for how these lands are managed.

The Roadless Rule has protected 30,000 acres of roadless lands in our canyons for 25 years — that’s over 22,600 football fields of open space, limited road construction, and preserved wild character.

The federal government is now considering rescinding this rule. Mayor Wilson’s Office has submitted a formal comment in opposition.

Why it matters: people cause 77% of wildfire ignitions, and land near roads sees about 4x the fire rate of roadless land. Fire prevention and forest health work can still move forward under the rule — we’ve seen it recently in Parleys, Mill Creek, and Big Cottonwood Canyons. More roads could mean more ignition points, not fewer.

Rescinding the rule wouldn’t mean immediate construction in our canyons, but it would remove a consistent baseline protection and leave long-term uncertainty for how these lands are managed.
