Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in an effort to halt the unlawful decision to convert a warehouse into an immigration detention facility on the City’s west side without following federal law.

The proposed ICE facility is a dire threat to the very essence of our community values. It would overwhelm the infrastructure in the region, harm area businesses, and strain public safety and public health resources. The federal government did not notify nor consult with local officials, including myself.

Please join me in wearing orange tomorrow for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Together, we can raise awareness, honor those whose lives have been lost to gun violence, and support efforts to build safer communities.

If you or someone you love is struggling, know that help is available—you don't have to face it alone.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of Karen Huntsman.

Karen made a mark in so many ways though a deep commitment to family and community. I appreciate her and her family’s deep commitment to advancing mental health solutions and cancer research, as primary passions. On a personal note, I will miss her kindness and grace.

Salt Lake County was proud to help bring the new "Rooted Together" History Walk at Holladay City Park to life.

Blending storytelling, public art, and community space, this beautiful outdoor museum honors Holladay's history through a meaningful monument and seating area overlooking the baseball field.

I encourage you to visit this new space to reflect, gather, and connect with the stories that helped shape the community.

Encouraging news from the latest Point-in-Time Count: unsheltered homelessness is declining in Utah and Salt Lake County.

Thank you to the service providers, local leaders, law enforcement, and community partners whose work is helping move our community forward. There's more work ahead, but this progress matters.

Last week I joined Jen Campbell and Tyler Clancy to talk about domestic violence — the leading cause of homicide in Utah. That’s a fact more people should know.

Salt Lake County is changing how we respond. Better training for law enforcement. More resources for survivors. And stepping in earlier, before a crisis gets worse.

This work matters. We’re not waiting.

Opioid settlement dollars are now doing real work. Salt Lake County just approved a plan investing in prevention, recovery, and reentry — from sober living housing to peer specialists to Project RIO, a program that helps people experiencing homelessness and behavioral health challenges reconnect with stability and care. Strategy turned into action.
