Concerned about Air Quality?
Residents of the Salt Lake Valley are uniquely vulnerable to poor air quality due to hazardous smog from carbon emissions and toxic dust blowing from the Great Salt Lake. Poor air quality doesn't just affect you while you're outside, it can leak inside your home as well.
Luckily, HEAL Utah teamed up with a Utah State University researcher to teach people how to make a low-cost air purifier with minimal supplies. All it takes is 4 air filters, a box fan, duct tape, and cardboard. This simple contraption will circulate air inside your home and filter out harmful particles, giving people an easy way to feel safer and healthier in their home.

This week we'd like to highlight our partners at the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project. At UCE, we like to say that the cheapest energy is the energy that you don't use, and SWEEP is putting the work in to prove it. SWEEP has published several blog posts proving that high-performing, energy-efficient houses are more affordable for home and and building owners, due to the lower operating costs of energy-efficient technologies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) dealt a major blow to clean air, public health, and energy affordability last month, with their issuance of two new rules—one which rolls back limits on pollution from fossil fuel power plants and one that weakens fuel efficiency standards, respectively. These actions harm human health and well-being, while also costing American households at the pump and at home.
Actions you can take:
🚲 Drive less, take public transit, bike, carpool, or use e-bikes/scooters to commute
🏠 Make energy upgrades and adopt more energy efficient, all-electric appliances for your home or business
📱Contact your local government representatives and let them know you want their leadership on climate, clean air, and clean transportation

Expensive energy bills are an issue that many Utah families face, and often financial assistance doesn't address why the bills are so high in the first place.
Our own Jennifer Eden led a huddle discussion last week at the GridFWD conference, "Beyond Bill Assistance: Reducing Energy Burden from the Ground Up". In this discussion, Kimberly Schmit of University Neighborhood Partners and Brandy Chambers of Eversource, led attendees through best practices to bring together residents, community-based organizations, utilities and advocates to reduce energy burden for families.
