Want to dive into Utah and American history in the leadup to the nation’s 250th birthday? The Pioneer Memorial Museum, also known as the “Smithsonian of the West,” is a great place to start.

Daughters of Utah Pioneers trace the trails and trials of their ancestors; celebrate 75 years at Pioneer Memorial Museum First organized in 1901, Daughters of Utah Pioneers has welcomed more than 100,000 members throughout its 124-year history.

Day 73 From Julie Thompson, Lesson Committee and Fourth Vice-President: When I take someone on a tour of the museum the first thing I show them is the hair art in the lobby. Where we go next depends on the audience. Men? We go right to the military room for guns and weapons, then to the fire engine. Women? Quilts, samplers, women’s suffrage, and everything in the main area of the basement. Youth? Of course, straight to the two-headed lamb and then upstairs for a ghost story that involves a stolen sampler. History buffs? The Transcontinental Railroad and the Eagle gate. Church history enthusiasts? The coffin canes and an interesting piece of art. (See video below.)

Day 70
Pioneer Memorial Museum is home to more than 43,000 pioneer histories. More than 600 histories of children who died on the trail were recently added to our collection. The names of these children are etched into stone tablets at This is the Place Heritage Park.
