Salt Lake Democratic Socialists of America This is the page for the Democratic Socialists of Salt Lake, an official chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly democratic socialist presence in American communities and politics. At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people. For example, we support reforms that:

- decrease the influence of money in politics

- empower ordinary people in workplaces and
the economy

- restructure gender and cultural relationships to
be more equitable

We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society. Our vision is of a society in which people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism — a vision of a more free, democratic and humane society.

The Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) is the youth section of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). We are students and young people organizing our universities, colleges, high schools, workplaces, and communities to fight the immediate needs of students and workers while building our capacity to fight for more radical structural changes.

The Riverton City Council quietly violated their own operating procedure to implement a 287(g) agreement without putting it to a public vote. We believe that they know how politically damaging complicity with ICE will be in the future, and are trying to hide their association. Instead, the community should turn out and pressure them into following the law, bringing the 287(g) agreement to a public vote, and voting it DOWN.

"There is no research showing that 287(g) agreements decrease crime rates. There are 2,500 of these agreements. There are powerful, well-funded institutions who would love to put forward a study showing that these agreements make communities safer. They have been unable to produce such research, because all of the evidence points in the opposite direction."

As the economy continues to spiral and the administration remains widely unpopular, Trump has accelerated his attack on any kind of dissent. People have been sentenced just for participating in organizing, the administration has launched massive spying operations on unions and political organizations, and they are posturing to undermine and attack the legitimacy of the midterms.

This Saturday 4pm at Ken Sanders Rare Books , 71percentcoalition CWA 7765 Salt Lake DSA Mormons With Hope For A Better World and Salt Lake Indivisible are convening a public forum on defending freedom of speech. How should we organize? How do we protect our freedoms?

Riverton’s 287(g) agreement was enacted in violation of their own code and without public vote or comment. Riverton City Council continues to leave the agreement unaddressed, likely to avoid having to have to put their names on something so unpopular.

Urge Riverton City Council to bring the agreement to a public vote, and to vote it DOWN! Their next meeting is on Tuesday, September 15th at 7 PM.

Last December, Salt Lake City stopped installing new ALPR devices following community backlash. The City had planned to accept a grant from the Trump administration to install more of these surveillance devices on Salt Lake City’s west side, but workers and activists went before the council and stopped the grant.

In spite of earlier efforts, the over 80 license plate readers already installed remained up, and now the council is trying again. On Tuesday, September 15, they will attempt to adopt insufficient safeguards in an effort to placate community concerns so that SLCPD can continue the build-out of its surveillance network.

Salt Lakers don’t want this surveillance tech, which is being used by a small handful of billionaires to solidify ever-increasing control over our day-to-day lives. The protections indicated are insufficient, and the data is clear: surveillance tech doesn’t keep people safe. Only community can do that.

Join the hundreds of cities that have stood firmly for civil liberties and prohibit ALPRs in Salt Lake City entirely.

At our last fundraiser we raised $6,000 and this time we’re going bigger: $8,000. Suggested donation for entry is $35 with a low income option of $10. 21+, so don’t forget your ID.
