Where lions once ruled, they are now quietly disappearing
There are half as many African lions than there were 25 years ago. Conservation programs aim to protect the disappearing species by promoting human-lion cohabitation across the African savanna.

100 BLACK RHINOS!
With the birth of the 100th calf, the Lewa- Borana Landscape is now a Key 1 black rhino population, the third in East Africa.
‘Key 1' rating is given by the IUCN’s African Rhino Specialist Group to identify significant populations that are stable, increasing and have achieved continental importance. We are optimistic about the future of this critically endangered species - we recorded ten births last year and no mortalities.
Geoffrey Chege, Lewa's Head of Conservation and Wildlife, has steered various efforts in support of the black rhino's recovery on Lewa, Borana and beyond for the past 15 years. He says:
"This has been a dream come true for us. We have steadily grown our rhino populations from 15 individuals in 1984 to the 100 black and 94 white rhinos we have today. Reaching the 'Key 1' milestone is a great motivation for our team."

Flora Mumbi's father didn't believe that educating girls was important, so she never had a chance to attend school.
"He claimed that educated women became 'headstrong' and
acquired bad habits," she says.
But Flora never gave up her dream to be literate. Now in her late 70s, she is finally learning how to read and write. She was one of the 318 students that attended our free Adult Literacy classes last year. Alongside teaching basic literacy, we also use this platform to extend knowledge on conservation, preservation of natural resources and more.

Happy ! Thanks to the generous support of those who stand strong to support wildlife conservation, Winos for Wildlife has donated over $85,000 over the past 5 years to help protect wildlife and support strong community development in Africa. As we continue to capacity build our conservation efforts, the event will be taking a 2018 hiatus. However, we do hope you'll consider contributing to this personal WinosforWildlife 2.0 fundraising initiative and help continue the fight for wildlife- THANK YOU WINO WARRIORS!
Winos for Wildife 2.0
Due to Dawn's long overdue healthcare hiatus this year (yeah for new, bionic parts at last!) we've been unable to prioritize our on-going, annual Winos for Wildlife fundraising efforts. However, we are still very passionate and dedicated to this cause so close to our hearts ...

Good news to share from the land of Lewa! Community conservation at work thanks in some small way to Winos for Wildlife!
2018 is definitely kicking off with a bang!
Great news coming in from Kenya Wildlife Service as the results from the 2017 census conducted in Northern Kenya show a 12% increase of the population in Laikipia-Samburu-Marsabit ecosystems over the last five years, from 2012-2017. This represents an annual increase of about 2.4% over this period.
During the census, a total of 7347 elephants were counted compared to 6454 elephants in 2012.
In other news, the in China is now in full swing! All commercial sales & processing of are now illegal in China.
We still have a long way to go, but each piece of good news we receive gets us closer to ensuring elephants are around for generations to come.
Please LIKE and SHARE our page so we can reach as many people as possible with all our updates! :)
