Yesterday, DPS hosted the 5th Utah Houses of Worship Safety & Security Symposium, bringing together faith leaders, security professionals, law enforcement, and community members around one shared mission: keeping Utah safe.

We are grateful for our federal, state, and local partners, including the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Utah, the FBI, Salt Lake District Attorney’s Office, and our threat management units, whose continued collaboration makes events like this possible. Protecting the fundamental right to safely practice faith takes a united effort, and yesterday showed how strong these partnerships have become.

Serving as our kickoff for National Faith & Blue Weekend, the symposium focused on practical solutions, highlighting the ā€œProtective Wrapā€ approach, which combines physical security with emotional support to build a continuous safety net for our congregations and youth.

As National Faith & Blue Weekend kicks off today and runs through October 11th, the real work moves into our communities. We encourage you to reach out directly to your local departments, faith leaders, and community partners, build those relationships, and turn these strategies into action.

Thank you to all of our partners and attendees for your leadership and dedication.

Test your car seat installation with the 1-inch test:
šŸ”’ Lock It: Pull the seatbelt all the way out to engage the locking mechanism. šŸ“ Wiggle Room: Test the seat at the belt path. It shouldn’t move more than 1 inch.

Rear-facing is the safest way to ride:
šŸ›”ļø Protect the Spine: Rear-facing protects a child’s head, neck, and spine in a crash. šŸ‘¶ Wait it Out: Keep them rear-facing until at least age two, or until they hit the seat’s max weight limit.
The right car seat matters. Get a free check at clickit.utah.gov.

Don’t skip the top tether for forward-facing seats!

Utah continues to see encouraging progress in reducing fatal drug overdoses.

In the last 12 months, preliminary data show drug overdose deaths in Utah declined 9.3% from 599 to 543. Opioid-involved overdose deaths also declined 8.5% from 410 to 375.

While no single effort can be credited with this downward trend, the Utah Fentanyl Task Force continues to work alongside community-based organizations and other partners across the state toward the shared goal of preventing illicit fentanyl use, overdose, and death.

Awareness remains an important part of that work. Counterfeit pills can contain fentanyl - and taking even one can have deadly consequences.

Don't play games with your life.

šŸ›‘ Drive Alert: It’s Drowsy Driving Awareness Week (August 16-22)

Lack of sleep is as dangerous as impaired driving. Getting less than six hours of sleep triples your risk of a crash, especially on long or solo trips.

The ā€œtricksā€ don’t work. Cracking a window or turning up the A/C are just temporary distractions, not a solution for fatigue. To truly stay safe, you need to get some sleep!

šŸ›ļø Plan ahead, and get enough sleep (7-9 hrs).

šŸ›£ļø Take breaks every 100 miles.

šŸ’¤ Pull over and power nap!

šŸ¤ Share the driving.

Sleep smart, drive smart! A message from the Utah Highway Safety Office.
