* Let's talk about pet waste. It's a bigger problem than most people realize.

Pet waste is a threat to human and environmental health because it contains harmful bacteria and pathogens, many of which can cause serious diseases in humans, including serious gastrointestinal infections (E. coli in pet waste can cause kidney damage and even death.), as well as infections to the ear, eye, and throat. Pet waste also contains many other nutrient pollutants, which contribute to excessive algae growth in a water body, upsetting the delicate balance of the natural habitat.

Yikes! * Water sample testing all along the Jordan River shows that our waters are highly contaminated by E.coli, which can make people and animals very sick. You can help! Don’t feed wild ducks and geese near waterbodies.

🌎 Happy World Environment Day! 🌿
Today is a great reminder that small actions can make a big difference for our environment—and our local waterways. Everything that enters a storm drain in Salt Lake County flows directly to our rivers, streams, and lakes without filters or treatment. That means litter, pet waste, leaves, and vehicle fluids can all become sources of pollution.

This World Environment Day, join us in protecting the water we all depend on by picking up trash, scooping the p**p, fixing vehicle leaks, and keeping yard waste out of the gutter. Together, we can help keep our communities cleaner, healthier, and more resilient for future generations, because we all live downstream. Learn more from Nebraska Extension-- stormwater minute. :)

Water and everything else we put in gutters and storm drains goes directly into our streams, culverts, rivers, and lakes-- . Help keep our water safe and clean by ensuring trash and debris stay out of our storm drains!

During dry weather, pollutants like bacteria, oil, litter, and pet waste build up on streets and sidewalks. Even when it hasn’t rained in a while, stormwater pollution is still a problem. When rain finally does arrive, all those concentrated pollutants wash into the Jordan River.

The best time to prevent pollution is BEFORE the storm (maybe this Saturday!)

Some of the most troublesome pollutants for streams, rivers & lakes include decaying organic matter, such as leaves, grass clippings, and other yard waste. Gutters & storm drains must be kept clear of all kinds of trash and waste!

* It's a great time of year to clean out the garage and garden sheds! Take old, unwanted paint and household chemicals to a Household Hazardous Waste collection facility near you! 🙂 Disposal is free for Salt Lake County residents.

Water is especially on our minds this spring, as we’re reminded how finite and precious this resource is. It takes just a few minutes to learn more about stormwater and how to keep it clean. KUTV Fresh Living and the SLCo Stormwater Coalition’s Josh Mikel team up to show you how.
