Employee work areas are required to have accessible approach, entry, and exist, but are otherwise generally excepted from having to be designed as physically accessible. Employee work areas are spaces where actual work is being performed. Machinery spaces, backroom inventory spaces, and catwalks are examples of areas that may require a specific layout or practice that preclude access. Qualified people with disabilities should be able to work in and around these spaces with reasonable accommodation. Restrooms, breakrooms, and employee parking are not places where actual work is being performed and should be designed accessible. Voluntarily providing non-accessible features during the construction phase of a facility may be less expensive and more effective in the long run than attempting to do so after the fact.
