My stake here in Minnesota was invited by the area authority to join other churches in Minnesota yesterday in a day of fasting and prayer for peace, unity, and change as well as an expression of solidarity with other Minnesotans and perhaps even those in our congregations who may be experiencing fear, uncertainty, and heartache at this time. This is no longer right versus left, Republican versus Democrat. This is people for freedom and human rights vs. people who are okay with violent and lawless authoritarianism as long as it doesn’t hurt them. As I shared in a previous post, there were and always will be members of our church on the wrong side of history: during the holocaust, during the civil rights movement, and definitely today. If you’re waiting until the majority of the “nice”people around you speak up and say something (because you don’t want to ruffle feathers or make people uncomfortable), you may come to regret your silence when it becomes clear that your silence enabled atrocities. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO HAPPEN TO YOU FOR IT TO MATTER TO YOU. That’s just another way of saying love your neighbor as yourself. May the members and leaders of my faith, @churchofjesuschrist have the integrity and courage to speak up and call this out. If not now, when?
