Today we honor Juneteenth — the day when the last enslaved Americans learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality for all. As Democrats, we recognize that the work of building a more inclusive and equitable society continues.

Salt Lake County is threatened by a proposed detention center that could hold as many 10,000 people. Families will face separation. Communities are living in fear. On Monday, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson announced a lawsuit fighting the DHS/ICE human detention warehouse.

And the Salt Lake County Republican Caucus - led by Aimee Winder Newton (aka the Director of Utah’s Office of Families) - response is... accounting questions.

When given a choice between standing up for families or talking about legal budgets, they chose budgets. Money first. Families last.

The Salt Lake County Democratic Party stands with Mayor Jenny Wilson, Mayor Erin Mendenhall, and most importantly the communities most directly targeted by this proposed ICE detention center.

Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City are better and stronger because of our immigrant neighbors. We reject efforts to turn our community into a hub for cruelty, mass detention and government overreach with a clear racial and ethnic bias.

This fight is about dignity, transparency, and standing up for the people who make our community home.

Join us for a Candidate Panel featuring the Democratic SLCo District Attorney Candidates Sim Gill and Shawn Robinson! This will be a moderated panel where both the moderator and our audience will get the chance to ask questions of each candidate.

The panel will start promptly at 6pm. The candidates will be tabling from 5pm - 5:50pm outside of the panel room for 1:1 questions.
