I have appreciated working with State Auditor Tina Cannon. I was pleasantly surprised to receive this letter today:
Dear Representative Thurston,
I want to personally thank you for your leadership during this session. You are a highly skilled statesman, and your involvement was instrumental in helping navigate the intense negotiations that occurred during a particularly high-tension period.
Because of your steady engagement and willingness to work toward common ground, we were able to secure statutory language that preserves the independence of the State Auditor while also protecting the integrity of the Legislature's role in the budgetary process. That balance is important not only for our office, but for maintaining strong and effective oversight on behalf of the taxpayers of Utah.
I am grateful for your commitment to thoughtful governance and for the role you played in helping reach a solution that strengthens both accountability and collaboration.
Sincerely,
Tina M. Cannon
State Auditor
We are grateful for the work of Representative Thurston this session!
Let’s Sine Die - Day 45
Something done sine die has no definite date or period to resume. It’s legalese for “indefinitely,” and Latin for “without day.” If a meeting ends with no set day to get back together, it’s adjourned sine die.

POV: You blinked and Utah passed 200+ bills
Grace has learned how to navigate life with one of the world’s most stressful seasonal conditions that lasts up to 45 days. Stories like hers inspire interns across the Capitol to visit the nearest Green Coat to see if Utempic is right for them. Watch the video to hear more about her journey.
Last week we celebrated Women’s Suffrage Day. How much do people really know about women suffrage?
The snow is going to melt in a couple of days but these bills will last a long time…
It is the constitutional duty of the Office of the Utah State Auditor to ensure public funds are accounted for legally, accurately and transparently. As currently proposed, Senate Bill 65 presents two very different interpretations for the required accounting of school-related property taxes. To clarify the complexities and consequences of each, we have produced a short informational video. We invite the public to watch and share this video to better understand this important matter.
