🚨 SALUDA COUNTY EMS MED MINUTE: Understanding Narcan 🚨

When a breathing emergency happens, every second counts. Here is what you need to know about Narcan (Naloxone) and why we give it—a quick, safe spray that can save a life.

1. How It Works🔑🔐

The "Key" Analogy: Think of brain receptors like locks, and opioids like keys that slow down breathing. Narcan acts like a master key—it kicks the opioids out of the lock 🔐 and blocks them, helping the person start breathing again within minutes.

🔻What it works on: It only works on prescription or street opioids, including:

Pain medicines like Vicodin, OxyContin, Morphine, Codeine, and Methadone
Fentanyl
He**in

2. It’s Not Just for Drug Misuse😲

Accidental poisonings happen in everyday situations to everyday people:

👶🏼Curious Kids: A toddler opening a pill bottle or picking up a dropped medication off the floor.

👴🏽Forgetful Seniors: An older adult who accidentally takes a double dose of their daily pain medicine.

💊 Medicine Mix-Ups: Taking prescription pain pills alongside sleep aids, cold medicine, or alcohol, which can slow breathing down to dangerous levels.

🚫Fake Pills: Taking a pill bought online or from a friend that unknowingly contained fentanyl.

👍🏻Good to Know: Narcan will not harm someone if their emergency is caused by something else (like low blood sugar or a heart issue). If someone is unconscious and breathing very slowly, don't hesitate—give Narcan and call 911 right away.🚑

🌲 SALUDA COUNTY HUNTING SEASON SAFETY 🚑

As hunting season kicks off across Saluda County, our team at Saluda County EMS wants to make sure everyone heading out into the woods comes home safely to their families.

🚑Tree stand falls account for nearly 50% of all hunting-related injuries, often resulting in severe spinal trauma, fractures, or internal bleeding. Fi****ms accidents and medical emergencies in remote areas round out the top risks we see in the field.

Here are six quick safety rules before you head to your stand:

🦌Share Your Location: Tell family or friends exactly where you’re hunting in the county and your expected return time.

🦌Harness Up: Tree stand falls are the #1 cause of major hunting injuries. Wear a full-body harness and stay tethered from the moment your feet leave the ground.

🦌Inspect Your Stand: Check straps and ladders for wear, and watch out for wasps, snakes, or critters nesting in your stand.

🦌Confirm Your Target: Be 100% certain of your target and what lies beyond it before taking a shot. Never shoot at movement or rustling brush.

🦌Keep Safety ON: Keep your fi***rm on safety until you are ready to shoot. Always use a haul line to raise and lower unloaded gear.

🦌Pack Emergency Essentials: Keep a fully charged phone on your body (not inside your backpack) and carry a basic trauma kit with a tourniquet.

Stay safe out there, Saluda County!
👉🏽
In an emergency, call 911 immediately. If you are in a remote area or timber tract, sharing your pin location or GPS coordinates can help our crews reach you faster.

Busy week, full hearts! 🚑💙

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of the job, but weeks like this remind us why we love what we do. From chatting with the wonderful kids at Wittenberg Preschool to finding a potential new employee, we’ve enjoyed every minute of connecting with you all.

We also had a blast covering the SCSO 5K! It was such a great event that Lt. Hallman couldn't resist jumping in on the action. 🏃‍♂️💨

We love our community, and we love serving Saluda County! Have a safe and great weekend, everyone!
