Halloween Safety Tips | Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office

Halloween is almost here! As families across Calaveras County get ready for trick-or-treating and other festivities, the Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to take a few simple precautions to help ensure a safe and enjoyable evening.

Trick-or-Treating Safety

• Children under 12 should be accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Stick to familiar, well-lit neighborhoods and never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
• Plan your route and establish a meeting place in case anyone gets separated.
• Carry a flashlight and keep phones put away while walking.
Costume and Pedestrian Safety
• Choose costumes that fit properly and do not obstruct vision or create tripping hazards.
• Use reflective materials or glow sticks to help children remain visible after dark.
• Cross at intersections or crosswalks when available, and look both ways before crossing.
• Never dart into the street or cross between parked vehicles.

Rain and Weather Safety

Rain is possible in the forecast, so plan ahead and be prepared for changing conditions.

• Bring rain jackets or umbrellas and wear shoes with good traction.
• Use extra caution on wet sidewalks and roadways.
• Remember that rain and reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. Make sure children are visible and stay alert near traffic.
• If heavy rain or thunderstorms develop, consider adjusting your plans and seeking shelter.

Candy and Pet Safety

• Inspect treats before children eat them. Discard anything that appears opened, tampered with, or suspicious.
• Keep pets secured indoors when possible. If walking with a pet, use a leash and make sure identification tags are up to date.

Driving Safety

• Slow down in residential neighborhoods and watch for children near intersections, driveways, and parked vehicles.
• Turn on your headlights early, eliminate distractions, and allow extra stopping distance on wet roads.
• Never drive under the influence. Plan ahead for a sober ride.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office will have additional patrols throughout the evening, and our volunteers will also be out helping keep an eye on our neighborhoods.

If you witness suspicious activity, please report it.
Emergency: 9-1-1
Non-Emergency Dispatch: 209-754-6500

We wish everyone in Calaveras County a safe and happy Halloween!
Look out for one another and help keep our community safe.

K9 Chiro Assists in Narcotics Arrest in Valley Springs

On October 25, 2026, at approximately 11:42 p.m., deputies conducted a vehicle enforcement stop in the Valley Springs area for a vehicle code violation.

During the stop, K9 Chiro assisted deputies in detecting suspected narcotics. A subsequent search led to the discovery of the following items:

• 9.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine
• 8.7 grams of suspected fentanyl
• Drug paraphernalia

The driver was arrested, and the above-mentioned narcotics were seized. The driver was booked on charges related to possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and sales of a controlled substance.

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid that can cause a fatal overdose. The seizure of suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine is a reminder of the dangers these substances pose to our communities. We appreciate the proactive work of our deputies and K9 partners in identifying suspected illegal narcotics and helping keep our communities safe.

K9 Chiro’s work during this investigation highlights the value of our narcotics detection teams and the training they bring to the field.

We appreciate their continued service to Calaveras County.

Potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in Calaveras County

PG&E is warning of a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) affecting portions of Calaveras County as early as Wednesday evening, October 14, through Saturday, October 17. The timing, affected areas, and duration may change depending on weather conditions.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to prepare now in case their power is shut off.

How to Prepare

• Check the fuel level in your vehicles.
• Fully charge cell phones, laptops, tablets, power banks, backup batteries, and other essential devices.
• Have emergency food, drinking water, flashlights, and extra batteries available.
• If anyone in your household relies on powered medical equipment, make a backup power plan now. Contact your healthcare provider about options to prevent an interruption in medical care.
• Stay informed by monitoring PG&E updates and local emergency information.

Generator Safety

Generators can be helpful during a power outage, but improper use can be deadly.

• Never plug a generator into a household wall outlet or connect it directly to your home’s wiring. This can send electricity back onto power lines and endanger utility workers who may believe the lines are de-energized.
• Have a qualified electrician install an approved transfer switch or other appropriate connection equipment.
• Operate portable generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents.
• Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Downed Trees and Power Lines

High winds can cause trees, branches, and power lines to fall. Treat every downed power line as energized.

• Never touch, approach, move, or drive over a downed power line or anything touching it.
• Keep people and pets away from the area.
• Call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate danger. Downed power lines can also be reported to PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.

PG&E Community Resource Centers

PG&E may provide Community Resource Centers (CRCs) for residents affected by a PSPS. Depending on the location and services available, these centers may offer device charging, Wi-Fi, bottled water, snacks, accessible restrooms, and other assistance.

Locations listed by PG&E for the area include:

• West Point Community Hall — 22283 Highway 26, West Point
• Chapel in the Pines — 2286 Cedar Lane, Arnold

Please check PG&E’s current information before traveling, as center activation, availability, and operating hours may change.

Residents with accessibility needs who require transportation to a PG&E Community Resource Center can contact Vivalon at 415-847-1157 to ask about available transportation assistance in Calaveras County.

CALAVERAS COUNTY “DROP THE DRUGS” DAY

The Calaveras County “Drop the Drugs” initiative, sponsored by the DEA and hosted by the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, is scheduled for Saturday, October 24th, 2026, from 10 am to 2 pm. This essential community event will offer two convenient locations for participants to use: Calaveras Lumber, located at 155 South Main Street, Angels Camp, and Toyon Middle School, on Highway 12 between San Andreas and Valley Springs.

“Drop the Drugs” Day provides an invaluable opportunity for residents to safely and responsibly dispose of any expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs. Our dedicated deputies will be stationed at each site to receive these materials. We kindly request that all identifying information on medicine containers be either marked out or removed to ensure complete anonymity. It’s important to emphasize that this service is entirely free, and participants will not be subjected to any questioning.

Since the inception of this program in 2011, Calaveras County’s “Drop the Drugs” events, in partnership with the DEA, have successfully removed thousands of pounds of potentially hazardous drugs and medications from our community. Historically, improper disposal methods such as flushing medicines down toilets or tossing them in the trash have posed significant safety, environmental, and health risks. Returning unused drugs to law enforcement agencies for proper disposal remains the safest and most environmentally responsible method, and the DEA is proud to support this initiative.

For those community members who may be unable to attend the event on October 24th, we have established permanent “Drug Drop Boxes” at two convenient locations: the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office in San Andreas and the Angels Camp Police Department. These boxes are available for drug drop-offs during regular business hours, supporting our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe and clean.

For more information about the Calaveras County "Drop the Drugs" program or the upcoming event on October 24th, 2026, please contact Deputy Tylor Byrd at 209-754-2895 or by email at [email protected].

***UPDATE*** The submission deadline has been extended to November 6.

Calling all Calaveras County young artists!

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce our holiday card drawing contest for young artists who are in grades Kindergarten – 6th grade and attend school (public, private, home school, charter) in Calaveras County. We’re inviting the young artists of Calaveras County to help design this year’s official Sheriff’s Office holiday card that is sent to agencies all across California. What we are looking for is an original piece of artwork that features the Holiday Season and your Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. Use crayons, colored pencils, markers, paint, or any other art supplies you like.

Please use one of two entry forms provided.

Students can participate through their schools or as individuals.

There are several ways to enter this drawing contest:

1. If school classrooms choose to participate, then drawings can be submitted on an entry form directly to CCSO School Resource Officer Deputy McNurlin in person upon request for pick-up.
2. You can email your student’s submission, scanned in color, directly to [email protected]
3. You can mail (please do not fold the picture if mailing) or drop off your student’s drawing in person at:
Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office
C/O H. Mossa
1045 Jeff Tuttle Drive
San Andreas, CA 95249

Deadline: All drawings must be submitted by November 1st, 2026.

We ask that all entry forms from classrooms include the student’s name, grade, and school so we can coordinate contact/permission from a parent/guardian once the winner is chosen. For individual submissions, please include a parent/guardian contact phone number.

Why are we asking for identifying information of the artist… and of course, what’s in it for you?

Well, we are glad you asked! The winner of this contest will not only have their artwork featured on the 2026 CCSO Christmas Card, but they will also get a ride to school by Calaveras County Sheriff Rachelle Whiting in one of our specialized Sheriff’s Office vehicles and a personal es**rt to their classroom.

Don’t delay. All artwork must be submitted by November 1st, 2026.
We look forward to seeing all the amazing art that gets submitted, the creativity, and holiday spirit from our Calaveras County kids.
