I met a man at an historical cemetery in Galveston today mowing some plots. I started talking to him and found out quick that this guy was extremely well versed in who was in the cemetery and their connection to Texas History. I asked him if he was born on the island. He replied, “yes”. He started telling about the history of the important individuals in the cemetery. This guy was amazing. He said that he was homeless but had everything he owned in the backpack and stroller along with his dog.
He touched my heart. I started walking away and thought about him having nothing but knowledge to share. I looked in my wallet took out a $20 and walked over to him. I handed it to him. He replied, “for me”. I said “yes”. He said this will go a long way for me. I told him that the time he gave me of his life by telling stories was time he will never get back in his life. I told him I can make money but never make up the time we spent together. He had tears.
To me it was money well spent. I felt good about helping him. Before I left I told him to buy some treats for his dog with some of the money. He said “yes sir I will”.
I had to share this story with you because I encourage everyone to understand a person with so little can give so much. God Bless Him.
