Therapy, comfort, companion, or emotional support animals provide comfort by being with a person and do not perform work or tasks directly related to their owner's disability.

For this reason, they do not qualify as service animals under the American's with Disabilities Act.

Emotional support animals might include and are not limited to: dogs, cats, bunnies, reptiles, etc. Whereas service animals are limited to dogs and in rare circumstances, trained miniature ponies.🐾

Meet Fawkes and Anneka!🐾

Fawkes is a 3 year old australian shepherd who has been Anneka's service animal for 2.5 years! In addition to providing her medical alerts and deep pressure therapy, he is in the beginning of his dog agility and dock diving career. He competes in these events at dog shows all over the state. He loves to play ball and to play in water at home. The majority of the time when he comes inside, he is soaked with water.

Individuals with service dogs are not required ot register with Disability Support Services unless requesting other academic accommodtions. 🐾

Meet Apawllo and Kayla! 🐾

🐾Since March 15, 2011, only dogs are recognized as service animals under title II and title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

🐕‍🦺 A service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.

🏢 Title II and title III entities must allow service animals to accompany a person with a disability in all areas where members of the public are allowed to go.

Today’s the day that DSS and the Epilepsy Foundation of Central and South Texas are celebrating Epilepsy Awareness month.
