The University of Texas at Austin, their President, and Board of Regents need to conduct a full review of their process for reviewing speakers, especially as it relates to their latest speaker Myron Gaines.

We all stand for free speech. However, allowing space for students to be attacked with racial and homophobic slurs, and not setting decent guidelines for decorum and diversity of thought is beneath this university. The University’s decision to allow these attacks is becoming habitual. And this kind of hateful rhetoric being allowed understandably leads to students, and their parents, being concerned for their safety.

The exchange of ideas and opinions does not mean that the University of Texas or any University should give free rein for any speaker to create a hateful environment insulting and attacking their students.

UT students, parents and Black student organizations are questioning the decision to allow a far-right speaker on campus amid concerns about racist speech at UT.

Dear Secretary Howden,

I am writing out of deep concern for our constitutional right to vote. Specifically, I am concerned with the reports of voters placed on the “suspense list” and the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) failure to send voter registration applications to our local county elected officials.

Reports have shown that Bexar County has received an estimated 45,000 unprocessed voter registrants due to the Texas DPS error. Will you please provide answers to the following questions by October 14, 2026?

1. Will all 45,000 DPS delayed voter registration applications be properly processed by the
start of early voting on October 19?

2. How many voter registration applications were submitted in the final week of voter
registration across Texas and in Bexar County?

It is imperative that our constituents understand how our Secretary of State is responding to this
emergency. Please contact me directly if I may address any questions or concerns.
