Congratulations to our newest Navy Hospital Corpsmen following their graduation from the Hospital Corpsman Basic (HCB) course at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

The HCB course is an introduction to the delivery of medical care and the associated duties of providing quality emergency, nursing and primary care procedures within fixed and deployable medical facilities. Students are introduced to the duties and responsibilities of corpsman who will be instructed in: medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, nursing concepts and skills, Basic Life Support (BLS), airway management, patient assessment, primary care, medical emergencies, trauma, operational medicine principles, and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3). Clinical training provides students with clinical knowledge and hands-on experiential training which consists of clinical practicum in a MTF, VA and/or civilian hospitals.

Graduates of this course receive 19 semester hours of credit from Uniformed Services University's College of Allied Health Sciences and are certified in Basic Life Support.

METC welcomed Navy Force Master Chief PatrickPaul “PaP” C. Mangaran, command senior enlisted leader for the Defense Health Agency, during a visit to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston June 18. FORCM Mangaran met with METC leadership and toured the Army Combat Medic Specialist Training Course, Air Force Aerospace Medical Service Apprentice course, Navy Hospital Corpsman Basic course, and the Army, Navy, and Air Force Orthopedic Speciality Technician course. Know the right actions for heat illness:
Heat Exhaustion: Move to shade, loosen uniform, and encourage sipping water. Monitor to prevent progression to heat stroke.
Heat Stroke: MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Call 911 immediately and start cooling with ice sheets.
