Today, the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs is meeting at the Capitol to hear directly from law enforcement leaders, school safety officials, mental health professionals, and public safety partners from across Texas.

Our work includes reviewing the implementation of House Bill 33, part of the Legislature’s response to the tragedy in Uvalde, and examining the needs, challenges, and gaps facing law enforcement officers and public safety agencies across our state.

I am proud to serve as Vice Chairman of this committee and as one of only two Democrats at the table. I do not take that responsibility lightly. Our communities deserve thoughtful leadership, honest oversight, and a state government willing to put resources where they are needed most.

I’ve attached the agenda below and you can watch live here: https://house.texas.gov/videos

For the first time in Texas history, this rule has been formally invoked to demand answers.

As Vice Chairman of Homeland Security & Public Safety, I have requested a hearing to examine the evidence and ensure full transparency.

The families deserve truth. Texas deserves accountability. Justice must prevail.

"When anyone in authority in any level of policing, federal, state, or local, decides to take the most drastic measure and that's ending someone's life, you need to be sure that you're doing it as a last resort," Lopez told CBS News in an interview Saturday. "I don't feel that the information that I've read implies to me that it was a last resort and I want to get to the bottom of it." - Rep. Ray Lopez
