As of January 1, 2024, a Texas law came into effect that bars public institutions of higher education from establishing or maintaining diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices or hiring personnel dedicated to DEI-related roles. Consequently, this legislation has triggered over 100 job cuts across university campuses in Texas.

This event will be hosted by the NAACP San Antonio Branch Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Committee and Education Committee

The San Antonio Chapter of Blacks in Government looks forward to celebrating our scholarship recipients with you at our annual Scholarship Gala on Saturday, July 27th at 7pm at the DoubleTree Airport Hotel. There will be a keynote speaker followed by dinner & music. Attire is Black and White Semi - Formal, NO jeans.

Let's come together to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our youth! Join us on Sunday, April 27th, at 11 AM for the ACT-SO awards ceremony, held at the Downtown Central Library. ACT-SO is a yearlong achievement program aimed at recruiting, stimulating, and encouraging high academic and cultural excellence among African-American high school students!

From visual arts and business to performing and culinary arts, participants work with community-based volunteers for a year to develop projects and performances. The experience culminates in local and national events where students compete for scholarships and other rewards.

Anthony T. Browder, the first African American to fund and coordinate an archaeological dig in Egypt, has conducted 23 archaeological missions to the region since 2009. He has devoted 30 years to researching ancient Egyptian history, science, philosophy, and culture. Recently, he visited San Antonio to present the lecture "The African Contributions to Civilization from Africa to America," sponsored by the San Antonio Black International Film Festival, Melaneyes Media, and the Carver Community Cultural Center.

"UT Austin has eliminated multiple staff positions previously focused on diversity, equity and inclusion in the latest effort to comply with Texas' anti-DEI law. Are you still unsure of what ACT-So is? The NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

ESSENTIAL ACT-SO UPDATES:

- Students are highly recommended to attend the contest information sessions scheduled for March 25 and March 30. Details will be sent once the student's application is received.

- APPLICATION DEADLINE: 7 pm Monday, April 1!
Applications will be accepted after the due date, but we can only guarantee judging in areas for which judges have already been secured

- ACT-SO Competition will take place April 14th at the Carver Cultural Center
