San Antonio River Authority SARA, created in 1937, is one of many such active river authorities in the State of Texas.
In 1917, the voters of Texas, recognizing the necessity of developing and conserving the Stateβs water resources and inspired by devastating floods of 1913 and 1914, passed a Constitutional amendment allowing the Legislature to create special purpose political subdivisions of the State to serve regional areas, generally coincidental with river basins and to be generally known as river authorities. Its jurisdiction covers 3,658 square milesβall of Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad Counties.

ποΈ May is Historic Preservation Month!
π Once buried beneath an ordinary parking at West Houston and Camaron Street, a remarkable piece of San Antonio's history came to light in February of 2020.
βͺ The archaeological site tells a richly layered story, including the St. James AME Church! Founded in 1867, it was the first AME church in San Antonio and only the second in the state of Texas!
β Today the site is known as the St. James AMEC Culture Crossing, the foundations are a testament to the confluence of cultures who have shaped San Antonio.
π As part of a commissioned artistic collaboration with Gordon Huether Studio and Andrea Vocab Sanderson, the San Antonio River Authority and San Antonio River Foundation have something in store! We are proud to honor this legacy and continue the tradition of gathering around water by transforming waterways with our mission of creating and maintaining Safe, Clean, and Enjoyable Creeks and Rivers!
